Ewing Y DNA Project

Wm Ewing is one of MDKEA in the Ewing Y DNA Project. He is the descendant of the progenitor of Ewing Clade/subclade/family group: 5B5 and is the progenitor of STR Group 2a,

Family Group 5B5 is defined by SNP R-FTA76740 and there are 12 confirmed progeny with Big Y DNA test results.

Clade 5 is defined by marker R-FGC19856 and is called the Large Group of Closely Related Ewings that has two subclades 5A and 5B and 12 major Family Groups;

Note that most experienced Ewing researchers believe that Wm's s son John was probably "adopted" and was the son of his 2nd wife and her first husband. This belief is supported by Big Y test results of 2 tested progeny of John. They do not have the markers of Clade 5 and create Ewing Clade 11 which is defined by marker R-BY65985,

Biography

It is a universal opinion that William of Scotland was born near Stirling Castle about 1660 and was of the old Loch Lomond Glasgow Clan; being one of the sons of William and Eliza (Milford) Ewing. He (William of Scotland) and an older brother Robert, and probably several other brothers were brought to Ulster County Ireland by their father at an early day. William of Scotland settled in or near Coleraine, where he spent his days, and Robert settled near Londonderry, where he died. [1]

William of Scotland was married twice. By his first wife, he had one child Nathaniel who was born about 1693. By his second wife, he had several children. We have records of only Joshua, Samuel, James and their sister Ann, all born near Coleraine, Ireland.[2]

To this branch, through one of this William’s sons, who became identified with Cecil County, belong: Adlai Ewing Stevenson, a distinguished lawyer and legislator, Vice-president of the United States in 1893-’97; James S. Ewing, United States’ minister to Belgium during the same period; and many other notable men and women. [3]

Conflicting Opinion

In the book Ewing - McCulloch - Buchanan Genealogy by Marguerite and Vernon Brown, they indicated that William {78} and Robert Ewing {74} were brothers and sons of another William B Ewing of Stirling. However, research that has been done to this date in Ireland and Scotland, that I am aware of, does not bring those two families together.[4]

These two families are indeed related, and are members of the Large Group of Closely Related Ewings who all have the SNP FGC1865.

The Browns do not give any basis for showing William Ewing of Stirling as the father of William and Robert. Clan Ewing of Scotland is probably considered by many to be the original "bible" of the Ewing families that we are writing about. After reviewing that book a number of times, I have not found any reference to a William Ewing of Stirling being the father of Robert and William Ewing. The Browns repeated information in several chapters in their book that was taken from Clan Ewing of Scotland.[5]

DNA Proof:

Ewing Surname Project Y DNA findings based on Big Y test results of 20 Ewing men. These results are conclusive.

These two families are indeed related, and are members of the Large Group of Closely Related Ewings (LGCRE) who all have the SNP FGC1865. The common ancestor for the LGCRE Ewings probably lived in Scotland 1560s (between 1510-1580) There are two major subgroups (A and B) within the LGCRE.

The B subclade is identified by the SNP marker FGC12863 which both the brothers (Robert and Charles ) and William "I Believe Ewing belong. This subclade is by far the largest group within the LGCRE. Genealogy of the test members has roots in Scotland > US, and Scotland > Ireland > US.

If these genealogies are correct then LGCRE progenitor had some descendants stay in Scotland and some went to Ireland which all evidence sugguests.

We have not yet identified the Common Ancestor of subclade B, but there is zero doubt that they are more closely related than previously believed .

Subclade B has 7 identified branches (each identified by a unique SNP marker). B.3: The brothers Robert Ewing-67 and Charles of Bedford Family group with 4 downstream branches/lines B.5 The common ancestor for William "I believe" Ewing-434 with 9 down stream markers; this family group has Margaret Fife's William of Georgia ancestor. B.1 Ewings of Inch and Carnashannagh (John of Carnashannagh Ewing-432 and James of Inch Ewing-912) with 7 branches/lines B.2 The ancestor of John of Hamilton with 3 identified lines B.4 The ancestor of John of Renfrewshire Scotland and William of Fairfield B.6 Findley of Burt Ireland , with only one line Identified. B.7 James of Ayrshire Scotland , with only one line identified

[note 2; I would like assistance in identifying the Wiki ID for each of the Ewings above.}

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
