Henry James Fanning was born in 1853 in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England to Robert Nickle Fanning and Isabella (Pritt) Fanning. His birth was registered in Ormskirk in the third quarter of the year (as Henry Fannin), with mother's maiden name Pritt.[1] Henry James Fanning was christened in Ormskirk on 21 Dec 1855 (the same day as his siblings).[2]
In 1861 Henry James Fanning (age 7, Scholar) lived at Penrhwylfa in Holywell, Flintshire, Wales with his father Robert Michael [Nickle] (46, Chief Clerk Flintshire), mother Isabella (35), and three brothers: Robert John (16, Clerk to Treasurer of County Courts), Matthew William (9, Scholar), and Richard Edward (3).[3]
Henry's mother Isabella Fanning passed away in 1864.
In 1871 Hy J Fanning (age 17, Apprentice Chemical Works) lived in Holywell with his father Robt N (Clerk to Chief Constable) and two siblings: Harriet E (23, Housekeeper) and Wm M (19, Apprentice Chemical Works).[4]
Henry's father passed away in 1874: "Administration of the effects of Robert Nickle Fanning late of Rhyl in the County of Flint Clerk to the Chief Constable of Flintshire a Widower who died 2 January 1874 at Milwr Cottage in the Parish of Holywell in the said County was granted at St Asaph to Robert John Fannin of Milwr Cottage Civil Service Clerk the Son and one of the Next of Kin."[5]

Henry James Fanning (clerk, son of Robert Nicol Fanning, clerk) married Emily Jane Roden (daughter of Edward Roden, lithographer) on 24 Dec 1882 at St Mark, West Gorton, Lancashire.[6] The marriage was registered in Chorlton, Lancashire in the last quarter of the year.[7]
Henry and Emily had nine children: Gertrude (Fanning) Knott (1884-1973), Isabella Maud Fanning (1886-1887), William Henry Fanning (1887-1889), Robert Edward Fanning (1888-), Albert Fanning (1890-), Minnie Fanning (1893-1893), Frederick Fanning (1895-), Nellie Fanning (1897-1898), and Ernest Fanning (1899-).
In 1891 Henry J Fanning (age 37, Railway Carriage Cleaner) lived at Watson Street in Gorton with his wife Emily J (26, Warehouse Cleaner) and three children: Gertrude (6, Scholar), Robert E (2), and Albert (0).[8]
Henry James Fanning passed away in 1899, aged 45 years. His death was registered in Chorlton in the first quarter of the year.[9]
