Margaret Farmer's birth was registered in West Ashford, Kent in the second quarter of 1854^[1]. She was the daughter of Charles Farmer and Catherine (Kitty) Morris.

At the time of the 1861 England and Wales Census, John, Hetty (presumably "Kitty" or Catherine), John J, Martha, George F, Margaret F, Daniel, and Mary Mills were listed as living in Shadoxhurst, along with Charles and Rebeca Farmer^[2].

Margaret married George Payne (or Pain) in Shadoxhurst on 18 January 1871^[3] or possibly on 11 December 1869^[4].

At the time of the 1871 England and Wales Census, John and Kitty Mills, Margariet Pain, Daniel Mills, Mary Mills, Frances Mills and Lilly Farmer were listed as living in Shadoxhurst, Kent^[5]. At the time of the census, Margaret's occupation was listed as "Groom's Wife".

At the time of the 1881 England and Wales Census, George, Margaret, Alfred, George, Elizabeth, Kate, Harry, and Daniel Chas Payne were listed as living in Kingsnorth, Kent^[6].

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales Census, Margaret, Harry, Daniel, Rose, Nelly, and Margaret Payne were listed as living in Staplehurst, Kent^[7]. Margaret was listed as a widow, and her occupation was listed as "Needle Woman".
