A MEMORIAL SERVICE The Woodford Sun
Sunday, January 19, 1933
The memorial service for Mrs. Ernest Dunlap held last week by the Women's Missionary Society of New Union Church was beautiful and an unusual tribute to a lovely woman. The service was held at the home of Mrs. John T. Gay.
Mrs. Gay's own tribute was very fine. We wish we had the space to use it all. She said in part:
"It is seldom we find one who possessed as many admirable characteristics as Mrs. Ernest Dunlap. She was refined and cultured both in mind and soul. ... The dominant passion in her life was service for others. She gave substantial help to many who needed it, throughout the years, and she did it so quietly and modestly few knew of her generosity. ... She had great dignity and reserve of nature, under which was a warm heart and kindly interest. She had very strong convictions, and her influence, which emanated from a strong personal character, gave to others who felt it loftier ideals and stronger faith .... She was a friend who for thirty-six years enriched my life by her love and counsel, and it is a privilege to pay tribute to one so gentle, so brave, so genuine, one who so richly and proficiently served her generation through service to her church, her family and her friends."
Mrs. Cad. Wheeler, leader for the afternoon, used the letters of Mrs. Dunlap's name to suggest outstanding traits of her character:
Duty
Unselfishness
Nobleness
Loyalty
Affection
Patience
In her remarks Mrs. Wheeler quoted those beautiful lines which compare woman to a "fair violet, loveliest of the glade," and which conclude;
"So woman, born to dignify retreat,
Unknown to flourish, and unseen to be great;
To give domestic life its sweetest charm;
With softness polish, and with virtue warm;
Fearful of fame, unwilling to be known;
Should seek but Heaven's applauses and her own."
Other tributes were paid in testimony, song or prayer, by members of the group, which strikingly emphasized Mrs. Dunlap's usefulness and her influence.
