Revolutionary War Veteran

Jared Farrand was born on Nov 21, 1756 in Norwich, New London Co., CT. Jared was a soldier of the revolution. The Farrands were among the early settlers in Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. Jared came to this country in 1832 and settled in Dover where he bought land and farmed. Jared's father moved to Vermont where Jared grew up. Jared learned to hunt and shoot wild game. He was such a good shot that he was only allowed to shoot at the head of a turkey in a turkey shoot and had to pay double to get in the competition. They said he could drive a nail with a bullet at a hundred paces three times out of five. It was these marksman that became a terror to the officers of the British army during the revolution. Jared ran away from home and joined Colonel Ethan Allen's soldiers. After that he joined a militia group called the Rangers. Later on he was employed by General St. Clair as a scout. Spring of 1777 Jared and a companion dressed like backwoods hunters and got in a canoe and went on the lower shores of Lake Champlain and down the Richeliaen river to St. Johns picking up all the information they could to the threat of invasion to the colonies by a British army from Canada which was suppose to ascend up the river to Lake Champlain. So they started collection guns and ammunition and enlisting men for defense. At this time Jared enlisted in Captain Joseph Safford's company, "The Green Mountain Boys", which became a part of the first regiment of regulars raised in Vermont for the Continental Army. This regiment remained in service till the end of the war. He was with Stark at the Battle of Bennington, also took part in Bennie's Heights and was severely wounded at the battle of Saratogo. After recovering from this wound he rejoined the regiment and was promoted to the First Seargeant of his company. He ended up being surrounded by a band of Mohawk Indians and was made prisoner and made his escape at night. If that's not enough he then got captured by the British while he was eating his dinner. His mind was not idle, he figured a way to escape and came riding into camp on his horse and with two extra horses. After the war Sergeant Farrand returned to his home in Vermont. Jared and Hannah Evens from Bennington, Vermont were married in 1783. They moved to Chittenden county, Vermont where he manufactured lumber for masts and spars of vessels. Then previous to the war of 1812 he moved his family to Dunam's flat in Canada where he bought and farmed land and did very well. Just as he was getting comfortable the second war of Great Britain started. Canada demanded allegiance from all her citizens. Mr Farrand not being willing to take this moved back to Vermont and left his property in Canada. Now with a large family of children, 14, 8 boys & 6 girls, to support he sets up in the business of shoe-making. He opened a store in Essex Vermont where he lived until 1832. He then joined a party of settlers going to Ohio and took two of his sons and his youngest daughter, Polly. At this time he was seventy-five years old still well pressed and vigorous. He stood 6 foot two inches in his stockings and powerfully built and possessed a fine physique and noble presence. He possessed great muscular strength and endurance and had a strong will and indomitable perseverance. On his hundredth birthday his neighbors gave him a surprise party. He was leading in the dance. In 1846 he married his second wife, Emma when he was ninty years oldand she was seventy-five being the brightest and spriest little women of her age in all the country. At his wedding he thanked God that he got such a young wife! They lived very happily for thirteen years when she died August 14, 1859 age 78. Mr Farrand lived in Cuyahoga county till He passed away on 28 June 1862 at the age of 105 years and 7 months in Middleburgh, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA. He was buried in Fairview cemetery, Rockport Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA.The Official roster of the soldiers of the American Revolution buried in the state of Ohio. He was a democrat. He voted at every presidential election from Washington to Abraham Lincoln. He claimed that the south had committed a grievous wrong in firing on the flag at Fort Sumter, and thought they should be punished for it. He was a Methodist for more than half a century. Never seemed to be in a hurry or excited, always rowdy with a good story and no one like a good joke better than he. Possessing this even disposition, he lived on enjoying his pension, and often "fighting his battles over again," for his great grandchildren. His mind appeared to be clear until a short time before his death, and he seemed to enjoy himself to the end of his long eventful life. The story about Jared Farrand from Ebooks
