Evelyn was the daughter of The Reverend Charles Ernest Farrar and Emily Attwood Farrar, born 19 March 1898 at Lake Benton, Minnesota.
Evelyn was among the last class to graduate from the old St. Helen's Hall, on Park Avenue and Ford streets, which was destroyed by fire. [1]
"Miss Evelyn Farrar, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. C.E. Farrar of Eureka, left October 1 for New York to enter the Institute of Musical Art, which is under the direction of Frank Damrosch. She will live with friends while in the East. Miss. Farrar graduated from the University of California with the class of 1918 and was a member of Alpha XI Delta sorority and the Treble Cleft, holding office in the latter. She held leads in the junior farce, senior extravaganza and other productions and was assistant song leader of the university. For the past year she has been soloist in Grace Cathedral."[2]
She married the actor Harold Otis Skinner 28 July 1921 in Manhattan. [3]The couple had met in rehearsals for a show.
"News of the marriage of a former Sacramento girl was received when cards came from Rev. and Mrs. Charles Ernest Farrar in Tuesday's mail announcing the marriage of their daughter, Miss Evelyn Farrar, to Harold Otis Skinner of New York. The ceremony took place in New York City on July 27."
"The bride is well known in Sacramento, where she spent most of her girlhood, her father having been rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church for a number of years before receiving a call to Eureka."
"Recently a charming voice led her to be cast in various musical comedies in the east, and it was while she was singing in "Mecca," an extravaganza, that she met Skinner, who was in the same company. She spent a portion of her vacation this summer with friends in Sacramento."
"Skinner is the son of Charles Skinner and nephew of Otis Skinner, the well-known actor. The couple will reside at 139 West Forty-seventh street, New York."[4]
They were only married a year, and sadly, Harold will ill for almost the duration of their marriage. He suffered a nervous breakdown, and then was ill for many months before passing away 13 September 1922 in San Diego.[5]
After his death, Evelyn moved to New York City and worked as a buyer for a retail store.[6] She married William McCulloch Webb on 12 August 1932 in New York. [7]She was 34 at the time of her second marriage. William was a bank manager.
The couple lived for a time in the San Francisco Bay area and later moved to Yreka, California, where they both died. Her husband died in 1990 at the age of 91, [8]and Evelyn died 31 May 1995 at the age of 97.[9]
