Biography

Cecily Farrar was born before 6 September 1631, presumably at her parents' home at Jordan's Journey, Charles City Incorporation, Virginia.[1] She is the daughter of William Farrar and Cecily (Unknown).

"… on 6 September 1631, William Farrar of London, Gentleman, sold his brother Henry Farrar of Reading, Berkshire, for £200 the properties and annuities so bequeathed, and since John Farrar had reserved these bequests to William's wife and children, the names of 'Cecily his wife and Cecily and William his children' appear in the deed."[1]

Research Notes

Vital Statistics

First Name
An unsourced alternate spelling of Sisly was previously listed.

Birth
An unsourced alternate birth date of 1625 is listed by Dorman.[2]

An unsourced alternate birth of 11 June 1637 at Farrars Island, Henrico, Colony of Virginia, was previously listed. This date is implausible as she was born before 6 September 1631.[1]

Marriage
Cecily ______ married:

  1. Isaac Hutchins (1610-1656).
  2. Henry H. Sherman (1630–1695), married about 1655 in Henrico Virginia.

Death
An unsourced death of 1 Feb 1703 in Varina, Henrico County, Colony of Virginia was previously listed. This may be conflation with the death of Cecily (Unknown) Sherman (1637-bef.1707), whose Find a Grave memorial lists her death as Feb 1704 in Varina, Henrico County, Colony of Virginia.[3]

Burial
Deleted from biography January 2024: "She died 1 February 1703 in Varina, Henrico County, Virginia.[citation needed] She is purportedly buried in Henrico Parish Church Cemetery, Henrico County, Virginia." (see comments)

Purported Marriages

Possibly Isaac Hutchins.[citation needed]

There is a claim that she married Henry Sherman, as Henry had a wife Cecily.[citation needed] Yet Cecily Farrar's brothers died long before Cecily, wife of Henry Sherman, did, and they made no reference to her in their extensive Wills. More specifically, John Farrar mentioned children of his brother William though none that would belong to a sister Cecily.

A transcription of Cecily Sherman's will is provided in the text of her Find a Grave memorial and names, among others, her daughter Anne Branch, wife of Christopher.[4] Anne's WikiTree profile - Ann (Sherman) Branch (abt.1663-1726) - is attached as daughter of Cecily (Unknown) Sherman (1637-bef.1707).

Purportedly Michael Turpin.[citation needed]

update - unsupported statement moved to Research Notes & corresponding info in death date/place datafields deleted

I think that the unsupported statement about her death and burial in the Biography section needs to be deleted or moved to Research Notes:

"She died 1 February 1703 in Varina, Henrico County, Virginia.[citation needed] She is purportedly buried in Henrico Parish Church Cemetery, Henrico County, Virginia."

It appears to be from Find A Grave: Memorial #136207307 & is about a different Cecily: Cecily (Unknown) Sherman (1637-bef.1707). That memorial has a transcription of that Cecily's will, dated 1 February 1703:

WILL OF CISLY SHERMAN Henrico County, Virginia Deeds and Wills 1697–1704 Page 364

1 February 1703[/04]

I have added a research note to this effect. I propose to delete the death and burial (Liz already did actually), and will proceed on 13 Jan 2024 unless a reliable source is found for this information for this person.

Farrar-4018 and Farrar-126 appear to represent the same person because: they appear the same. I added Cecily as Isaacs' spouse and her profile didn't come up.

Farrar-4018 and Farrar-126 do not represent the same person because: from Farrar-4018: NOTE: It has been speculated that she was Cecily Farrar, born about 1625, a daughter of William and Cecily Farrar, but there is no evidence to support this conclusion. Further, Mrs. Cecily (______) Hutchins Sherman was not mentioned in the extensive wills or other records of the wealthy Farrar family.

I believe this needs another look. The "Note" could have been placed on Farrar- 126 as well. In the source "Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607–1624/25" Isaac Hutchin's is mentioned. Also in "Purported Marriages" it mentions Isham Hutchins. In the Even if my Cecily is not a merge at least change her birth to about 1625 as per sources. Also where did her date of death come from?

What was your intended identity for "your" newly created profile Cecily (Farrar) Sherman (abt.1624-1703)?

1. Cecily, wife of Issac Hutchins, or 2. Cecily, daughter of William and Cecily (Unknown) Farrar

posted by Ken Spratlin
It came from Researching. Isacc Hutchins is where I started. I read numerous scenarios and written word concluding that Cecily was his spouse. That led me to William Farrar and his information which strengthened my conviction. I believe there is another Cicely, Unknown-144779 married to Isaac Hutchins that has what I believe to be the wrong parents.
posted by Anne Massey
Is there a reliable source or a circumstantial case (other than just the first name Cecily) for the marriage?

if the parents of Isaac Hutchins are incorrect, they can be corrected or detached.

posted by Ken Spratlin
The profile you created conflates two profiles (I'm saying that instead of "conflates two persons") as there is no reliable source for the marriage of THIS Cecily Farrar (bef.1631-1703) with Issac Hutchins. So depending on your intended identity for the newly created profile, it needs to be merged into either (1) Cecily (Unknown) Sherman (1637-1707) who married Issac Hutchins, or (2) Farrar-126 and the marriage detached.

I added the citation for her birth. The source was there just below, but it was not properly cited.

The 1625 date appears in Dorman, but is unsourced. So I added it to the Vital Statistics research note instead. If it is reliably sourced elsewhere, let me know.

As the Biography states, the death date is unsourced. It has been in this profile since the day it was created in 2011, unchallenged and unsupported. Varina was added to the death place in 2017.

Farrar-2065 and Farrar-126 appear to represent the same person because: Despite the different birth years (1625/1637), these appear to be duplicates that need to be merged.

Unknown-144779 and Farrar-2065 do not represent the same person because: Cecily wife of Henry Sherman is a different Cecily than Farrar-2065
