Footnotes

There is no record of the birth of Leonard Farrar, he first appears in the 1790 Census Pendleton co, SC. Also in the census in the same County are Richard Farrar Jr, Seth Farrar and Thomas Farrar. Said Thomas was a cousin of Richard and Seth, as was Leonard.

There has a been an assumption, by the descendants of Leonard Farrar (see Some Farrar's Island Descendants, Alvanh Holmes, 1973 that this Leonard was a son of Richard Farrar-100, based on a will of Shadrack, and a Pittsylvania County, VA tithable list that mentions a Renard (Raynard) Farrar, and the proximity of Leonard to Seth and Richard J in 1790.

However Leonard named his oldest son John Sutton Farrar, in conformance with a colonial naming tradition, father would name his eldest son after is father.

Otherwise John Sutton Farrar was a 2nd cousin once removed, and there is no conceivable circumstance in which he would choose to name his oldest son after so distant a relative.

In his revolutionary war pension application, cited above. Leonard mentions his sister Milley maried to Mashack Stephens.

The family of Mashack notes his marriage to Milley Farrar, 1780 in Goochland County, VA

The co-location of Leonard with the Farrar family in Pendleton County, VA is easily explained.

His father John Sutton Farrar, was a neighbor on Tuckahoe Creek, in Goochland County, VA, and disappears from all records after Apr 4, 1772

Henrico Co. Deeds, 1767-1774, p. 410, 4 April 1772, John Sutton Farrar and Susanna, his wife, to James Allen, for 20 pounds, their interest in one Negro wench named Lucy and her increase, who was to be sold pursuant to the will of William Patman at the death of his wife and equally divided among his five children: Agness Tharp, wife of Thomas Tharp, Elizabeth Morris, wife of William Morris; SarahFreeman, wife of Gideon Freeman; May Allen Patman and Susanna Patman, who has since death of her father married John Sutton Farrar. Wit: William Allen Burton, Matthew Hopson, James (his + mark) Drake.Signed: John Sutton Farrar, Susanna (her+ mark) Farrar. Date of record not given.

The absence of Leonard's name in Shadrack Farrar's 1780 will, and his co-location in Pendleton County, VA in 1790, can only be reconciled if John Sutton Farrar died after 1772 and Leonard being a minor, born Apr 1774, was placed in the Guardianship of Richard Farrar-100, with his sister Milley being left in the care of a cousin John.

As fatherless children were considered orphans, even until the 20th Century, they would be placed in the guardianship of relatives and neighbors who often used them as free labor the same as their own children.
