From the Hebden Bridge Times and Calder Vale Gazette

Last Friday, Mr. Luke Crawshaw Farrar, of 13 Mason St., who carried on an extensive business as a tripe dresser, died suddenly. Some weeks ago he had a fall in Manchester, and hurt one of his knees, and was confined to bed for some time, but he evidently recovered from the effects. Following this he had some trouble with his heart, and was again under medical attendance. He was, however, doing well, but on getting up on the morning in question, he had a sick attack, and died before the doctor could be summoned. Deceased was a native of Stones, Soyland, but came to Hebden Bridge many years ago, working as a spinner at Mayroyd Mill until the mill stopped. Afterwards he engaged in several businesses, and latterly he developed a good business in tripe dressing, and in this capacity was widely known. For some years he was a member of the committee of the Hebden Bridge Co-operative Society, and was for a considerable period one of the directors of the defunct Hebden Bridge Cotton and Commercial Company. He was a member of the Gun Club and the Bowling Club. Deceased was 64 years of age. He married a second wife short of twelve months ago. He had three children by his first wife. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the graveyard of the Wesleyan Chapel, Stones, Soyland. The cortege was of an imposing character, mourners being conveyed in no less than twenty-two horse vehicles, and the occupants included, besides the family, those with whom deceased had business connections, representatives of clubs of which deceased was a member, and personal friends. Altogether there were over a hundred persons present. A large crowd of people assembled in the streets to witness the passing of the cortege. The service was conducted by the local Wesleyan minister. A number of beautiful wreaths were laid on the coffin. [2]
