Biography

William and Agnes Farrie sailed from Ireland on the Lord Dunluce, one of five ships engaged to take Covenanters to South Carolina, and arrived on 20 December 1772. In spite of an outbreak of smallpox on the ship, they were allowed to disembark on 5 Jan 1773. The next day William "Fairey" received a Royal Grant of 200 acres (plat folder 559) from the South Carolina Council. The land lay in Craven County, an original county of South Carolina covering the northern part to the North Carolina boundary. The land was surveyed on 2 Feb 1773 and was described as bounded by the land of William Boyd, David Chesnut, John Pike, Mathews Grimes and Elisha Garret. No watercourse or other identifying landmark is cited but the grants to the neighbors show that the land was on Rocky Creek and therefore in what was after 1785 in the southeastern portion of Chester County. James and David, brothers of William Fairie, and their sister Agnes Smith and her family were all able to receive grants along Rocky Creek in the vicinity of the farm and churches of William Martin.

May have gone by "Nancy"; married first cousin John Smith Jr. in 1766
