18 July 1942, John enlisted in the Australian Army; Service Number: VX80680[3][4]. He was assigned to the 2/1 Composite Anti-Aircraft Regiment, attained the rank of Gunner, served in Borneo, returned to Australia and was discharged on 17 January 1946. Further details are not yet available.
John died on 3 April 1969 in Parkville, Victoria, aged 62 years.[5] and was buried at the Altona Memorial Park[6].
