Biography
Robert Farthing was born in Suffolk, England.
Robert Farthing was born in about 1828 in the small parish of West Stow, Suffolk, England. He is believed to have been the son of Robert Farthing and Critty "Mary" Gooch, whose marriage had taken place in West Stow in October 1826.[1]
Two siblings were born in the area close to West Stow before the family moved south to the village of Aldham, where his father's family had lived some years earlier, and where Robert's four youngest siblings were all born. Robert, like his father and brothers, worked as a farm labourer.

Marriage: Robert married Elizabeth Deeks in 1858, when he was about 30. The marriage was registered in Cosford district in the third quarter of the year.[4]
The couple had just one child, a son whose birth was also registered in the third quarter of 1858.[5] He was baptised William at St Mary, Aldham sometime later that year,[6] but sadly died the following year, when he was less than a year old.[7]
Robert continued to work as an agricultural labourer and the couple spent the rest of their lives living in the rural area to the north east of Hadleigh. They began - and ended - their married life at Red Hill, a small cluster of houses a short walk across fields from the church where their son was baptised, and also lived in the hamlet of Aldham itself, a couple of miles further east.

Widowed: Elizabeth Farthing died in the final quarter of 1899, aged 72. Her death was registered in Cosford district,[12] and she was buried at Aldham.[13]
After her death, Robert continued to live at Red Hill, with his widowed sister Mary Ann Blofield.

Research Notes
There were a number of (probably related) people of this name in the parts of Suffolk where this Robert lived. He is not to be confused with:
- Robert Farthing who was just slightly younger and lived his whole life in Cosford registration district, mostly in Lindsey.
- Robert Farthing, who was probably born in Bury St Edmunds but gave his place of birth as West Stow (where he had probably been living as a child) in the 1871 census. That Robert lived his whole life close to Bury St Edmunds, in West Stow and its neighbouring parishes of Flempton and Culford.
- Another Robert Farthing of much the same age who was born in Nacton, to the south-east of Ipswich. That Robert was the son of John and Sophia and appears to have married Sarah Ann Yellop in Nacton on 23 Aug 1852.[16]
