Biography

"The first of the name Fay we meet in England is Radulphus or Ralph De Fay, or de la Fay, to whom Henry the II in 1154 granted the extensive manor of Bromely, in Surrey. He held until the 19th of Henry II, when taking part with Prince Henry against his father, he was disseized, and Bromely was granted to Baldwin de Bethune. Afterward it was again escheated when King John by charter, dated at Poitou 4 December 1199, granted it to Ralph de Fay, the son, who, with many members of his family, was then engaged in that monarch's service in France."[1]

As he was Seigneur or Lord of Faye la Vineuse should his surname be Chatellerault? Assuming he died in Brumlegh Manor, Surrey he was still a Frenchman, shouldn’t his son Ralph who was actually born in Brumlegh be the first English Faye?

Hard one to corroborate! “La noblesse du Midi …” by Christian Settipani, (2004, Prosopographica et Genealogica) has a footnote on page 274, in French, that notes “Raoul” taking the surname de Faye from his mother Elizabeth.

Mémoires de la Société des antiquaires de l'Ouest by Société des antiquaires de l'Ouest (Poitiers, France), 1872, in French, shows lineage for parents, and cites the marriage of “Aois ou Adenoris, femme de Guillaume X” to Hugues (Hugues II) de Châtellerault formerly Châtellerault.

https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/AQUITAINE%20NOBILITY.htm#RaoulChatelleraultFayedied1190 The MedLands link shows a “Raoul” as a son of current parents though does not cite a spouse or children. It also notes the marriage of Aénor (Châtellerault) d'Aquitaine to Guillaume (Aquitaine) d'Aquitaine.

Several online trees show a spouse of Adelaide (Aquitaine) de Fay though I’ve not found any that cite a source for the marriage. I’ve not been able to find any other sources to support the marriage. Were the current couple married, they would be first cousins. Personally, given the amount of information available up the line, I would assume there would be something out there citing the couple.

Hope this is of some help.
