Biography

Samuel William Featherstone was born on 20th July 1855 in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England. His parents were Samuel Featherstone and Emma née Shuell. He was baptised on 9th August that year at St Mary's in Marlborough, Wiltshire. When he was 5 years old he was living with his parents in Wiltshire and when he was 15 years old, he was still living in Devon, with his parents and his younger sister Julia. By 1881, he was living with his parents, sister and paternal grandmother at Whitehaven, Devon, where his father was the vicar. Samuel was an undergraduate student at the time.

Samuel received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Durham University in Durham, England and became a clergyman.

He married Jannetta Harrison Hargrave Carroll at Holy Trinity church in County Cork, Ireland on 11th Sept 1884. They had a son Hargrave Carroll Featherston born in Devon in 1886 and a son Samuel Dashwood Featherstone, born in Devon in 1889.

Reverend Samuel Featherstone passed away in Devon in May 1908, aged 53. His obituary appeared in The Western Times newspaper on 18th May 1908. His wife Jannetta is recorded as widowed in the census of 1911 and was living in Devon with their son Hargrave Featherstone and her half sister Mabel Hirtzel.
