Biography

English flag
Enoch Fenwick S.J. has English ancestors.

Enoch Fenwick, son of George Fenwick and Margaret Medley, was born on 15 May 1780 on Swamp Island in Saint Mary's County, Maryland.

Enoch descended from one of the original Catholic settlers of the Maryland Province, Cuthbert Fenwick. One of his brothers was Benedict Joseph Fenwick, who became the second Bishop of Boston and a president of Georgetown College. Another brother, George Fenwick, also entered the priesthood, whilst a fourth brother did not enter the clerical state. Fenwick attended Georgetown College from 1793 until 1797. The president, William Dubourg, identified him as the best student in the college, and appointed him in 1797 to teach rudiments to the young students in the lower school. In 1805 he entered Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. On 10 October 1806 he entered the Society of Jesus, becoming a member of the first class in the Jesuit novitiate at Georgetown, and one of four who were the first Jesuits ordained priests in the United States. He was ordained priest on 12 March 1808 in Georgetown by Bishop Leonard Neale. [1]

The Reverend Enoch Fenwick, S.J. died on 25 November 1827 in Georgetown, District of Columbia, United States, and was buried at the Georgetown University Jesuit Cemetery. [2]
