He married Isabella McAllister in Glasgow on the 14th of April, 1833.[2][3] Archibald's occupation was given as a saddler, like his father.
Archibald Ferguson migrated from Scotland to Canada.
The family migrated to Canada via New York via the ship Sarah in 1848. On board were Archibald (37) and Isabella (37), and children Agnes (13), Jane (9), James (6), and John (3).[4] It has been suggested that Isabella died in New York.[5]
Archibald married his second wife, Elisabeth McLean, on the 27 Feb 1849 in Galt, Waterloo region, Ontario, Canada.[6]
At the time of the 1851 Census, Archibald was again working as a saddler and living with Elisabeth. Two of his children: John (aged 7) and Catherine (2) were also present.[7]
In 1861 Archibald (48) was farming and living in a single storey log cabin. Present were James (21) and John (14), both working as labourers, "Cateren" (11), Lawrence (9), Hector (7), and Archibald (3).[8]
Archibald died at Waterloo, Ontario, Canada 9 Nov 1878.[10]
Research Notes
Birth record has not been found.
His son Hector's biography contained the following information (note that some is obviously incorrect):[11]
Mr. Ferguson was born on a farm near New Aberdeen, a village which once existed five miles from Berlin, in Waterloo county, Ontario, on the nth of November, 1854, and is a son of Archibald and Elizabeth (McLean) Ferguson, both of Scotch ancestry. The father was the youngest of seventeen children born to Archibald Ferguson, a successful builder in Glasgow, Scotland, who went to that city from Perthshire in the Highlands. Three of his brothers served in the Thirteenth Hussars, the Seventeenth Lancers and the Forty-second Highlanders during the East India wars, and all made creditable military records. On the maternal side Mr. Ferguson is a grandson of Captain McLean, of the Forty-second or Forty-sixth Highlanders, who fought under Abercrombie on the Nile and under Moore and Wellington in Spain. Archibald Ferguson, father of the subject of this review, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1812, of Highland Scotch ancestry, and for many years conducted a large mercantile establishment in his native city. He moved to Canada in the year 1848 and there resided until his death. His wife was born at Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, and was the eldest daughter of Captain Hector McLean, of the Forty-second Highlanders.
