Biography

Helen was the daughter of Fergus Ferguson, a Writer and Alison Drummond. On January 10 1847 she was baptised by the Rev James Walker.

Fergus Ferguson Clerk Residing in No 4 Advocate Close, High Street, Edinburgh and Alison Drummond his spouse, had a daughter born in High Riggs in this Parish on the Third day of October Eighteen Hundred and Thirty Seven___________________Named Helen Drummon. Baptised by the Rev James Scott, Minister of the Relief Congregational Church, Bread Street to which effect the said Fergus Ferguson made affadavit before on of her Majestys Justices of the Peace.

Census 1841 - Helen Ferguson, Age 3, Est birth 1838, Female, Born Midlothian, Scotland, Civil Parish Edinburgh High Church, County Midlothian, Address 357 High Street Advocates Close, Parish No 685/1

She and Peter Murray Finnis married by banns, in 1855 at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. Helen had 2 known children in her marriage to Peter.

To supplement the family income, Helen worked as a Factory Cleaner in the 1860's. By 1871 her widowed mother had come to live with the family.

Peter passed away in 1880 aged 52 and Helen, [1]], provided an income for herself, her widowed mother and daughter Alice by taking in lodgers, students who were studying at Edinburgh University.

The 1881 census records, Alice Finnis 60, Head of house, Helen Finnis 41 Occupation - Keeps Lodgers, Alice Finnis 21, John R Macgregor 25 Lodger, John Craigie 23 Lodger. They are living in the Parish of Edinburgh, St Cuthberts, Registration Newington.

Helen died in 1892 aged 53 at 21 Montague Street, Edinburgh. Her daughter Alice was present at her death.
