- She is often called a daughter of James and Agnes (Adams) Ferguson, but most gedcoms documenting their ancestry do not list a daughter Mary. They also state the first child of this couple was born in 1735, while Mary was supposedly born in 1733, making this parentage possible but undocumented.
- James and Agnes, like Mary, had a son named Abraham.
