Biography

James was born in 1858 in a small hamlet called Marymailen in the Lanarkshire parish of Cadder. At the age of 3, he travelled top Queensland with the rest of his family on the ship 'Clifton'. They settled in South Brisbane where JAmes attended school. In 1881, he married Amelia Caroline Comley at the Presbyterian Manse, South Brisbane. James worked as a labourer. HE decided to try for a land selection at Wallumbilla to which James and his newly arrived family moved. James's son also called James became lost in the bush. He was found alive but died a short time later. Their farming enterprise was plagued by drought so they moved back to BRisbane. He then applied for land selection near the newly established rail head and small settlement of KIngaroy. The land was cleared with the help of his oldest son, Alexander and a road cleared from the selection area to the township, by JAmes, Alex and other neighbours. A house was built and a farm established. DAirying was their first farming venture. More land was cleared and corn was planted. When a buuter factory was built in town, James would take the cream to the factory himself each day by horse and sulky. Eventually he bought an 'Essex' car. HE was associated with the building of the first school in the district at MT JOnes in 1902. HE was a foundation member of the KIngaroy Agricultural show society. After the butter factory was opened , James was appointed a KIngaroy director on the board of the co-operative dairy association. He retired from the board in 1931. He was also a member of the first hospital committee. He was a founding and staunch member of the KIngaroy Presbyterian church. James Ferguson ... He passed away in 1941.
