Biography

Henderson Ferguson, planter, was born in 1770 in the Fairfield District, South Carolina - probably the son of William Ferguson and Anna Henderson. If he is, indeed, their son, it is likely that he, and his brother Ansel, emigrated to the Bahamas.

Henderson Ferguson married Frances McFee, daughter of Mrs. Constance McFee, in the Bahamas. Mrs McFee's will indicates that her son-in-law was Henderson Ferguson. Constance McFee is buried at the Hermitage in Great Exuma next to her son-in-law, Henderson Ferguson, and his good friend, George Butler.

Henderson and Frances McFee Ferguson had one daughter, Frances Ferguson, who was born in 1799 at Great Exuma, Bahamas.

Henderson was Salt Commissioner at Little Exuma - as reported by the Royal Gazette in 1811.

Henderson's tombstone at at the Hermitage Cemetery, Exuma reads:

Sacred/to the memory of/Henderson Ferguson/a native of South Carolina in the U. States/who departed this life/at his residence the Hermitage Great Exuma/on the 14th.day of Novr 1823/aged 53 years.

Henderson Ferguson left a will in which he mentioned his wife, Frances, and his daughter, Frances, wife of Robert Butler, of Nassau, Bahamas. He also made mention of his brothers Isaac and Jacob, and his sister Marion Lumpkin, residents of the United States.
