Biography

Eli Ferguson was born in South Carolina to Moses Ferguson and Elizabeth Lively in 1794, and he died in Carroll County, Mississippi in February 1850.[1]

Eli married twice. His first wife was Mary Applewhite whom he married, probably in Marion County, Mississippi Territory, about 1814, based on the 1816 census for Marion County, Mississippi Territory.[2] In that census, Eli Ferguson is head of a household with one female over 21 (perhaps Mary), one male under 21 (perhaps Aaron, new born), and one female under 21 (perhaps Susan, age 1 year).

Eli married his second wife, Ellen Slocum, in Carroll County, Mississippi, on 2 November 1845.[3]

Eli served in the War of 1812, serving from January 6, 1815 to February 5, 1815[4] (enlisted for 3 months but soon discharged, assigned to Capt. James Phillips Co.13th regiment (Nixons) Mississippi MIlitia Muster rolls pay eight dollars per month).[5]

Beginning in 1816, Eli can be found in various records of land:[4]

CENSUS U S Mississippi 1816 Marion County, Moses next door and Aaron & John Applewhite nearby).[2] They are listed in Early Inhabitants of the Natchez District, English Land Grants 1769-1779 (spelled Fargarson)[4]

At the 1820 Census, Eli is living in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana,[6] with his father, Moses, and four of his brothers, Isham, John, Samuel, and Aaron.

At the 1830 Census, Eli is living in Copiah, Mississippi,[7] near two of his brothers, Isham and Aaron, with his wife and three children.

In the 1840 census Eli was in Carroll, Mississippi, United States.[8]

Eli Ferguson died February 1850 in Carroll, Mississippi of typhoid fever after being sick for eight days.[1]

Eli and Mary (Applewhite) Ferguson had the following children:

  1. Susan Ferguson (born about 1815)
  2. Aaron Ferguson (born about 1816)
  3. Everett Ferguson (1818-1862)
  4. Elizabeth Ferguson (born about 1821)
  5. John Carroll Ferguson (1822-1886)
