Fergus was the son of John Ferguson and Katrine/Kathrin/ Katrin/Christian, Dewar/Deor, one of 6 known children and possible twin of Janet. He was brother to Archibald, Donald, Elspet, Janet and Katrin.

He is recorded as having had 2 baptisms, both at Fortingall. The first, on November 30, 1752 and the second on February 2, 1754. His sister Janet is also recorded as being baptised on both these dates.

He was employed as a Valet to Sir John Henderson ^[1] of Fordel-Barr in St Andrews parish. Fergus later became the Owner/Proprietor of a tavern at Cellars Close, Lawnmarket and he renamed it Fergusons Tavern.

In 1791, he married Jean Gifford in Edinburgh. He was recorded as Valet in St Andrew and Jean as daughter of deceased Nicol Gifford, Vintner of Dalkeith. Two sons were born in their marriage, Cosmo in 1792 and Fergus 1797.

Jean Gifford Ferguson was later to take over the running of Fergusons Tavern and was a famous woman at the time. She passed away in 1830.

Fergus died in 1839 at the residence of his son Cosmo, 29 Frederick Street. Fergus was 87 years old.
