William was born in 1854. in Blackhall, Kirkintilloch in Dumbartonshire, Scotland. He was 8 years old when he emigrated to Queensland with his parents, siblings and other family members on the Clifton' leaving in July 1861 and arriving in Moreton Bay on November 15 1861.The settled first at the one Mile Swamp on the southern outskirts of Brisbane. They moved to Woolongabba in Brisbane. His parents first had dairy cattle and then opened a general store. At an early age he went to work for a blacksmith and this was his trade for the remainder of his life. He married another Scottish immigrant, Marion [Mirrin] Gray in November 1875 at the Presbyterean Manse in Ann Street, Brisbane. The established a home in Hawthorne Street, South Brisbane. He continued his blacksmith business at that address but the family had moved to a farm at Cleveland prior to 1907. The name of the farm was 'Thornlands, and William resided there until his death. He was the son of James Ferguson and Ann Spowart. He passed away in 1926 and is buried in the Cleveland Cemetery.
