Biography

When Martha Ann Ferguson was born in September 1847 her father, James, was 18 and her mother, Cynthia, was 19. She married William Jasper Pool on November 2, 1865, in Pickens County, Georgia. They had nine children in 22 years. She died on March 8, 1934, in Rome, Georgia, at the age of 86.

Martha Ann Ferguson stood 5 feet, 2 inches, was always a little chubby and had curly, dark brown hair. She wore her wide wedding ring on the middle finger of her left hand. She was always a lover of horses and hater of Damn Yankees. She often related tales of her childhood during the Civil War to her granddaughters Lela and Winne when she was living with their parents. Martha Ann Ferguson was born in Georgia, in September, 1847. She died on March 8, 1934 at the home of her daughter, Lela Mae Giles, in Rome, Georgia, and is buried in the Salem Methodist Church cemetery near Farrill, Alabama just across the state line on the left on Highway 20 from Rome, Georgia to Cedar Bluff, Alabama. Her headstone, installed some years after her death, incorrectly gives her year of birth as 1852 and age as 86. She was 85 years old at her death. They were married in Jasper, Pickens County, Georgia about 1865-1866. Her father was off to the war and her mother was suffering from ill health, so she had to do much of the work around the farm and caring for the younger children, who included a younger brother, Billy, who was a cripple and later moved to Rockmart, Georgia. She was about 16 and Billy was about 7, when Sherman's army began its march through Georgia. While there were no major battles in the area, there were numerous patrols and raiders. Food was in short supply, so they hid their hog back in the woods and went back to feed it each day. But, they didn't hide their horse and milch cow which they kept at the farm. One day, an Yankee patrol came along and took the cow. Martha Ann went out and argued with the patrol leader but to no avail. He explained that he and his men had to eat, and that they weren't on a picnic. However, he did give the family a hind quarter of the cow and posted men at the Ferguson's front and back doors to protect them. There may have been an ulterior motive to this since Martha Ann was taking food to her brother, John, who was hid out in the woods from the Yankees due to his size, though he wasn't old enough to be in the army. About the same time a neighbor lady, Mrs. Bell, asked the leader of an Yankee patrol not to destroy the grist mill since it was the only one in the area for the families to use. The Yankee replied that he would have it destroyed and that after they left, "If a jackrabbit comes to this area, he'll have to bring lunch." Also during this time, her father returned from the war on furlough and spent one night with the family, returning to the war the next morning. It was the last time they ever saw him. One morning during this time, Martha Ann went to the barn and found that during the night her horse had laid down and got its head caught under the wooden wall She described with vigor her attempts to saw the horse loose while avoiding its struggles. Shortly thereafter, a passing Yankee patrol took her horse, Muggins, and started down the road. When Martha Ann saw what was happening she ran out, grabbed the horse's bridle and started telling the soldiers they couldn't have the horse, it was all they had to make crops with and they would starve. Despite her crying and lamenting, the soldiers took Muggins, but told her they had had to abandon a lame horse some three miles back, and it should be alright later if she would go get it. After cursing the Yankees out of sight, she got a rope and her brother, Billy, and they went, found and caught the home, and made two crops with it. They named the new horse Muggins as she did all her homes. When it came time to kill the hog, there were no men home in the family, nor in fact in the neighborhood, so the teenage son of a neighbor came over to help slaughter the hog. This is how she met her future husband, W. Jasper Pool. They married shortly thereafter, while both were quite young. They remained in Pickens County until about 1890, and most if not all their children were born there. The story of their move to Floyd County, Georgia in three wagons, one pulled by oxen and two by horses is told in the tale of THE POOLE FAMILY. Martha Ann had been educated, possibly by her parents, since she later taught Jasper how to read and write. This happened at Early Station, Floyd County, Georgia where he wanted to be a Justice of the Peace(?). He would come home from his job with the railroad and they would study at night. Also she had a reputation as a good businesswoman. Once while living near Early, she on her horse, Big Muggins and her youngest son, Doyle, on Little Muggins had been visiting with friends or relatives across the Coosa River. To get there they had to ride for some distance to cross the bridge though the place they were visiting was almost directly across the river from the Pool place. Time passed unknowingly, and Martha Ann suddenly realized that she didn't have time to get home and prepare supper for Jasper by the time he returned from work with the railroad if she returned the way they had come. So she forded the river, a fair sized one, leading her son's horse though she couldn't swim. When they got home she quickly dried down the horses so her husband wouldn't know of her adventure, and had supper ready when he arrived. She was a lifelong, churchgoing Methodist, but a sedate woman. Friends and relatives were quite surprised one night when one of her sons joined the church, as she was so elated she began to clap loudly and pray. Martha Ann was excellent at sewing and hand embroidery and followed the typical daily pattern of southern women of her time. In the mornings, she would work in the fields like a field hand, but at lunch she would freshen up, put on a black skirt, white blouse and beautiful neck pen, and retire to the porch with her rocker and fan for an afternoon of conversation, sewing and embroidery. She continued this afternoon routine throughout her life whenever physically able. Later in life she occasionally returned to Tate's Mountain, Pickens County, Georgia to stay at the cabins by the lake with her daughters and grandchildren and to visit the scenes of her youth. Her aunt ran the Linden Hotel in Jasper and the cemetery was full of her relatives. Shortly before her death, Martha Ann broke her hip in a fall at her son, Leslie's, and was mostly bedridden thereafter. Just before she died she tried to get up and told those in the room to, "Gloss my shoes." The 1900 Census of Floyd County, Georgia shows Martha A. Poole as head of household, age 52, white female, born September, 1847 in South Carolina and her mother and father were born in South Carolina. Living with her were sons Doyle, Oliver L., Garnett, Guy and grandson Claude. The 1913 Rome City Directory list M.A. Poole, widow of W.J. Poole, living at 6 Etowah Terrace with her son, Guy T., a clerk at Hale-Jenis Company, and his wife Lola.
