Disputed Origins

Abigail Ferris has been shown with parents Joseph Ferris and Mary (Hoyt) Ferris. So far, the only quality source found showing her last name or marriage is the Mead book listed in the sources. Joseph and Mary Ferris did have a daughter, Abigail (Ferris) Pennoyer, shown by several quality sources. She married John Pennoyer in 1725, and died in 1737. The Abigail of this profile died about 1733, as apparently also did her spouse Jonathan Husted. As such, it is not possible that both Abigails were the same person with multiple spouses.

Abigail's "parents" will be disconnected from this profile until quality sources for her rightful parents are found and added to the profile.

Biography

Research Notes

The only recognized source found so far showing her name was Abigail Ferris is the Mead book, which does not cite sources, nor include information to show she was Joseph's daughter (e.g., birth date, etc.). This source is known for many errors.

Another source found shows Jonathan's wife only as Abigail _______, with no information on last name, birth date, parentage or marriage. It says that Abigail married _______ Gregory after Jonathan's death in 1733.[1]

No marriage sources for Jonathan and Abigail have been found, nor has her second marriage to Mr. Gregory (searched all vital records for Connecticut).

No entry in Connecticut Town Marriage Records (Barbour Collection) showed the marriage at all - for either Jonathan or Abigail. With multiple spellings possible for Jonathan's last name, it could be recorded with another, very different spelling.

The marriage records from U.S. and International Marriage Records are not reliable; their information comes from family trees, among other places.

Abigail was born in 1702. She is the daughter of John Ferris and Abigail Hoyt. She married in 1737 to Ebenezer Gregory in Greenwich, Connecticut.

No additional genealogical data has turned up to suggest merging these two "Abigail" profiles at this time.

Ferris-2292 and Ferris-496 are not ready to be merged because: Possibly the same person, more research needed. See comments on Ferris-2292

Ferris-2292 and Ferris-496 appear to represent the same person because: Same person
Regarding merging this profile: There are at least two "Abigail Ferris" individuals living at the time:

1) Abigail Ferris 1701-1737, daughter of Joseph Ferris and Mary Hoyt, m. John Penoyer, is buried with that surname;

2) Abigail Ferris 1701-1784, m. Ebenzer Gregory in 1737 (this profile);

3) Abigail Ferris abt.1696, m. Jonathan Husted 1695-1793, (He the son of Angell Husted and Mary Mead) per DAR records.

It is not possible that all three are the same person; the issue seems to revolve around which Abigail married twice, and if so, why aren't there records to connect her to two spouses.

As such, it seems prudent to continue to maintain both Abigail Ferris profiles until reasonable proof emerges as to the connection to the three spouses associated with the name.

Ferris-2292 and Ferris-496 appear to represent the same person because: she's clearly a duplicate, as is her husband Jonathan. Ferris-2292 cites a TAG article for her parents (which are said to be unknown on Ferris-496).

I suggest we leave them as an unmatched merge. There is no doubt that there are at least two Abigail Ferris individuals living at the same time. There are three spouses associated with the name Abigail Ferris, but scant documentation, as you noted. See also comments on Ferris-2292.

What source shows this is the correct Abigail Ferris, wife of Jonathan?

Hey. I noticed Abigail Ferris is a repeat here. With both profiles having different spouses, Any possibility of Abigail Ferris having married a second time? Ferris-496 & Ferris-1621
