He was an early pioneer in the Northwest Territory, having emigrated from Long Island, with his family, in 1789, and came to Columbia in that year. In 1801, he joined the Baptist Church there. In 1807 he came to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and was one of the first Baptist ministers to preach in that part of the State. He was a leader in the organization of the Lawrenceburg church and was its pastor for more than thirty years. He practiced as a physician at Lawrenceburg for a long time but still continuing to preach. During his later years he was engaged in the drug business. Member of Indiana territorial House of Representatives, 1814-15; delegate to Indiana state constitutional convention, 1816; member of Indiana state senate (at Corydon), 1816-18; member of Indiana state house of representatives, 1820-22, 1826-27, 1830-31
