James was born in Chertsey Surrey in 1814. He is the son of George Field and Elizabeth Willis (maiden name unsourced). James was christened in Chertsey on 13 November 1814.
James worked for many years as an agricultural labourer.
On 31 October 1840, James married Caroline Javes. James and Caroline would become the parents of 7 children who were born between 1841 and 1852.
James was widowed when Caroline passed away in early 1855. The following year, he married Eliza Punter (nee Russell).
