Biography

John Field, son of John and Elizabeth (Everden) Field was born on February 20, 1671/2 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts. [1] [2] [3] [4]

He married Elizabeth Ames at Bridgewater in November, 1697. She was born there on September 6, 1680, son of John and Sarah (Willis) Ames . [1] [2] [3]

The family lived in Bridgewater and Providence, Rhode Island.

Elizabeth died in 1739 and was buried in the West Burial Ground. Her grave was moved to the North Burial Ground in May, 1865. [5]

Captain John Field 3d, 1671-1758, was buried in the West Burial Ground. His grave was moved to the North Burial Ground in May, 1865. [5] His inscription reads: John Field 3D Son of John 2D Born in Providence in 1671 & Where he died in 1758 -- John Field his Son. Born in 1704 and died in 1729 and was buried in Bridgewater, Mass. [6]

Captain John Field of Providence wrote his will on June 26, 1754 and it was proved on April 5, 1757. [Providence docket Vol. i: No. 708] In it he names: [4]

  • grandson John Field, sole executor, to have the homestead lands
  • grandson James Field to have land adjacent that of Joseph Snow
  • my three daughters Elizabeth Snow, Sarah Howard and Susannah Keith a share of furniture and household items plus one hundred pounds to be divided shared between them.
  • children of my sister Elizabeth Briggs, ninety pounds
  • children of my sister Lydia Mandly
  • nephews Anthony, Jonah, Jeremiah and Samuel Steers and to niece Loranna Coman, each ten pounds.
  • Mary Snow, singlewoman of Providence for the care she has provided to the testator, ten pounds exclusive of her wages.
  • my negro man Jefferey to choose which of the children he chooses to live with and be cared for by and if none are agreeable, then my executor shall care for Jefferey. [4] [7]

  2. Sarah born on January 7, 1700; married Jonathan Haward on July 30, 1719. [1]
  3. Susannah born on February 25, 1702; married Joseph Keith on October 3, 1721[1]; died at East Bridgewater on November 1, 1759. [8]
  4. John born on February 27, 1704; married Mary Haward November 15, 1726 [1]; died in 1729, [5] was buried in the West Burial Ground, but was removed to Bridgewater, Massachusetts in May, 1865. [6] His widow married second Elisha Pierce. [4]
  5. James born on September 12, 1705 [1]; died on August 11, 1729 [9] at sea, unmarried. His father Captain John was granted administration of his estate in October, 1729. [4]
