Born at Buxted, Sussex and the eighth of eleven known children, Jabez was listed as a gardener in the census of 1911. He was then living at Chiddingly with his wife Ann (Stevens) whom he had married in 1902. They had at that time five children. Jabez later became the Pastor of Hope Strict Baptist chapel at Blackboys, Sussex, until his death. He was buried there on 11th May 1951.
