Biography

Origin

Nathaniel Finch was born "say" 1662 at Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut Colony, a son of Daniel Finch and his third wife, Mary (Unknown) Dickerson Finch.[1]

After his father's death in March 1666/7, His mother married to Nicholas Pinion of East Haven, Connecticut. Nathaniel certainly would have removed to New Haven with his mother and new step-father.[2]

NATHANIEL FINCH SR. was born 1660 in Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut. He was the son of Daniel Finch and Mary (maiden name unknown). After his father died, he moved to East Haven with his mother and new step-father Nicholas Pinion. He married Mary Hemingway in 1691. They had 1 child before Mary died: Samuel. After Mary died he remarried to her sister, Elizabeth Hemingway in 1694. The marriage was without her father Samuel Hemingway’s consent and because he did not file proper publication of bans of marriage. Puritans also considered this type of relationship as incestual. He was fined and went before the Court in Hartford, Connecticut. The Court annulled the marriage but they had a child, Daniel, who was eventually baptized in the New Haven Church. After the annulment he moved to Branford, Connecticut. Elizabeth later remarried to Zachariah Howe in 1702. Nathaniel remarried to Mary Hoadley (1666-1737), daughter of Capt. William Hoadley, around 1698. Mary was twice widowed, being previously married to Jonathan Frisbie and an unknown Darby, and had 5 children previously: Mary; Elizabeth; Jonathan; Hannah; and Abiel. Nathaniel and Mary had 4 children together: John; Nathaniel (1701-1784); Thankful; and Lydia. They would later move to Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, where he died in 1720. Mary later died in 1737 in Stamford, Connecticut.

Marriages

Nathaniel married three times.

  • He married by 1691 at East Haven, as his 1st, to Mary Hemingway (b 5 Jul 1668), daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Cooper) Hemingway.[1][3] She died c. 1692.[3]
  • He married by 1694 at East Haven, as his 2nd, to Elizabeth Hemingway (sister of Mary), but the marriage was denounced by all parties concerned and invalidated by the court.[1][4] Elizabeth then married on 17 Dec 1702, as her 2nd, to Zachariah How, and she married on 5 Aug 1718, as her 3rd, to Samuel Brockett.[3]

Property and Positions

Nathaniel removed first from East Haven to New Haven. On 5 February 1693/4, when he was of New Haven, Nathaniel sold a Fairfield property to Albert Dennie.[2] Then after his marriage to Elizabeth ended, Nathaniel removed to Branford, Connecticut.[2] In 1697, Nathaniel, of Branford, leased land he still owned in Fairfield.[2] In his later years, Nathaniel later to Norwalk, Connecticut.[3]
