Data taken from the family bible left by his son Miles indicates that he was the father of 12 children with three different wives. Wife #1 being Mary (Mercy) Miles (abt.1745-bef.1780) who was the mother of three sons whose names are lost to time and all who died before son Miles compiled his family bible (perhaps more on this subject to be added below). Wife #2 is said to be Sarah (Ferris) Finch (1759-1804). Sarah died in 1804 after having birthed eight more children. The third and final wife of Nathaniel is said to be Abigail (Waring) Finch (abt.1755-1842), the widow of Isaac SMITH. Abigail outlived Nathaniel and died in 1842. Abigail seems to be the mother of Nathanel's final child born in 1806, however see below for further information.
The Children of Nathaniel Finch
The Children with Mary "Mercy" Miles
As mentioned before, according to his son Miles Finch, Nathaniel had three sons by his first wife Mary Miles. We don't have a lot of information about Mary or when these two may have been married (principally because many records were destroyed or temporarily discontinued during the years of the Revolution). So we must speculate that his first marriage came at around age 20 (so in 1764). We also know that he became Minister of the Baptist Church in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1784. So that is a 20 year period where we have no information about him. Presumably all of his three sons with Mary were born between the start and end points of this era (1764 to 1784). Given that he was likely involved in military action in some way, it is easy to imagine that he could be in New York State during that period (or even with his youngest uncle Peter Finch (abt.1740-aft.1768) in Old Northumberland County, Pennsylvania). Since there are several Finch men living in New York State before 1800 whose parent is unidentified, and who died before Miles Finch composed his family bible, there are a few options about possible sons. Before any speculation, we should gather data on where Nathaniel may have lived between 1764 and 1784. Perhaps this would be a good place to remove speculation to a "sub-wiki" Free Space?
