Biography

Joseph Finch Sr.

Origin

Joseph was the son of John Finch and Martha Elizabeth Brett, and the brother of Samuel Finch, Sr.[1] He was born in 1648.[2]

Note: The sources used for origin information did not assign a maiden name to Joseph's mother, but called her only Martha Finch.

Property

  • On 23 March 1663/64, he was granted a parcel of meadowland at Mianus Neck in Greenwich.
  • On 30 December 1670, he was granted a portion of the lowermost meadows lying south of the Westchester Path.
  • Joseph Finch was one of the 27 proprietors of Horseneck in 1672.
  • On 16 December 1673, he was granted an interest in the outlands lying between the Mianus and Byram Rivers.
  • On 7 June 1709, Joseph Finch was selected as delegate to the General Assembly held in New Haven.

Marriage

November 23, 1670 at Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Joseph married Elizabeth Austin, daughter of John Austin, previously of New London, Connecticut.[3]

Children of Joseph and Elizabeth Austin:[1]

  1. Joseph (eldest) born c. 1675
  2. Samuel born c. 1677
  3. Jonathan born c. 1679
  4. Benjamin born c. 1682

  6. Elizabeth mar John Whitney Jr. of Norwalk

  8. Martha NOTE: Martha is not shown as a daughter in the Prindell source, and in fact the argument is made in the article that the given name of the daughter who married Mead was unknown.

March 20, 1712, Joseph married Ruth (Hardy) Mead, widow of John Mead.[1]

I'm just an old man and I found out the Martha finch I tried to add because she was listed in Ancestry Family Trees for Joseph was not a daughter of Joseph. She belonged with Isaac Finch.
