Major Samuel Finley served with 1st Virginia Regiment (1781), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

  • Samuel was born in 1752. He died in 1829 at the age of 76.
  • Served in the Virginia cavalry during the American Revolution. Lieutenant of Sheppard's Rifle Company, 7/9/1776. Captain in the 11th Virginia, 12/20/1776. Promoted to Major of Posey's Virginia Riflemen. He served to the close of the war. He was also an officer in the War of 1812. 2 brothers were officers in the Revolution: First Lieut. Andrew Finley of the 8th Pennsylvania and Capt. John Finley of the 8th, 5th, and 2nd PA Regiments.
  • Spouse: Mary (Brown) Finley 1768 - 1838. They were married 5/5/1789 at Big Spring Presbyterian Church in Newville, Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Per Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Church Records.

  • Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served as a Surgeon in the Pre-Civil War U.S. Army and as Surgeon General of the Army when the Civil War broke out in 1861. He continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1862, when other officers dealt with and improved Civil War methods of medicine. He was nonetheless brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army for "long and faithful services in the Army"

This Major Samuel Finley was a personal friend of U.S. President George Washington and a Revolutionary War Veteran. He was the first land Agent in Ohio and one of the first United States Senators from that State.

Samuel seems to have picked up an extra spouse named Mary Brown. Do you know which one is correct?

The Mary Brown (b. September 10, 1768) that married Samuel Finley is the correct wife. I have deleted the other Mary Brown. Not sure where 0r who added this, Thank you for catching this.

Finley-2257 and Finley-231 appear to represent the same person because: There is an age difference between partners. This is the husband of Mary Brown, daughter of James and Mary McClelland Brown per the Herald Stout "Clan Finley" 2nd edition genealogy.
