Biography
- David Erastus Finley's memoir, "Life of an Old Time Minister," (page 131) says that James was the third of five children of John Finley and Esther Reid. His marriage license, issued 30 Sep 1811 (probably in Shelby County, KY) lists his bride as "Patsy" (i.e., Mary) Ramsey. James moved to Shelby County, KY between 1806 and 1811, and to Lincoln Co. MO in 1829. James was a surveyor. Family lore says that James gave to each of his children 300 acres of land in Lincoln County. His daughter Sarah's land became the farm of her husband David Wilson in 2014 that land remains in Finley hands. James and his wife are buried in the Finley-Wilson Cemetery in Lincoln County, MO
