Biography

Richard Finney was born about 1787. He was the son of Caleb Finney and Bathsheba Salisbury. Richard married Esther Sears on January 28, 1808 in Sackville.[1] or [2] In 1820, they were living in Sackville and had 5 children.[3]

In 1850, Richard and Esther were living in Lubec, Maine.[4] The family is listed on the census as follows:

  • Richard Finney, 63, Fisherman
  • Esther Finney, 60
  • Miles Finney, 19, Laborer
  • Nathaniel Finney, 16, Laborer

Living in the same house were:

  • Nehemiah Ward, 32, Laborer
  • Jemima Ward, 26
  • Martha A Ward, 1
  • Richard Finney, 63, Seaman

All of the above are listed as born in New Brunswick. It is presumed that Jemima Ward is the daughter of Richard and Esther, but this needs to be confirmed. It is unknown why Richard Finney was listed twice.

In 1861, Richard and Esther were living in Westmorland Parish, Westmorland, New Brunswick (likely in Midgic).[5] The household consisted of:

  • Richard Finney, 73, farmer prop.
  • Esther Finney, 71, wife
  • Miles Finney, 29, son, farmer
  • Rebecca Finney, 26, wife
  • William E. Finney, 2, son

They were all listed as Baptists, born in New Brunswick.[6] Jemima (Gemima) Ward was living next door. She was a widow with 3 children. Esther's brother Reuben Sears and his family are on the same census page.

Richard owned 40 acres of land, of which 10 acres were improved farmland. The cash value of the farm was $400, with another $45 worth of implements and machinery. He owned 2 milk cows, 2 working oxen, 1 other cow, 2 sheep and 4 pigs.[7]

Richard died in October 1861 and was buried in the Midgic Cemetery.[8] or Find a Grave, database and images : accessed 12 May 2020), memorial page for Richard Finney (unknown–Oct 1861), Find A Grave: Memorial #120017980, citing Midgic Cemetery, Midgic, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada ; Maintained by KAREN LOVY (contributor 47428524)

Phinney-919 and Finney-599 appear to represent the same person because: Same person, 2 spellings, both were used, both are correct.
