Research Notes

Original Details:

Most researchers have the Nathaniel Finney who married Hannah Wood as the son of John Finney and Ann Toogood, b. 3 Jan 1720 in Swansea, Ma (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZD8-RMK)

The Nathaniel Finney born on December 10, 1733 was the son of Samuel & Hannah (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZD1-RFN). The Nathanial Finney who was the son of John and Mary Finney was born June 4, 1732 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQXZ-VXR). Neither of these could have married Hannah Wood in 1840.

18 Jul 2019 Stu Ward: It's unlikely that Judith Briggs Finney is the same woman that died in Falmouth in 1762. She was likely alive much later and it's unlikely that the Nathaniel Finney thata married Thankful Tupper is the same person as this profile. I'f discussed thi further in Judith's profile.

28 Oct 2020 Stu Ward: I have disconnected this Nathaniel Phinney from Abigail Hatch and Thankful Tupper as those are obviously wives of 1 or 2 different Nathaniel Phinneys. I'll not speculate on which is which but it is impossible that this Nathaniel be married to either. The 1809 death in Machias is related to the man that married Thankful Tupper. I've changed his death place to New Brunswick since he was still alive in 1803.

  • A Nathaniel married 2Abigail Hatch on 18 Dec 1758 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Colony
  • A Nathaniel married 4Thankful Tupper on 13 Jan 1763 in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts Colony[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

There were three Nathanial Finneys.

1) son of John Finney and Ann Toogood, b. 3 Jan 1720 in Swansea, Ma (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZD8-RMK)

2) Son of Samuel & Hannah b. born on December 10, 1733 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FZD1-RFN).

3) son of John and Mary Finney, b. June 4, 1732 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQXZ-VXR).

One of them married Hannah Wood in 1840, which could only have been the one b. 1720, as the others were too young.

If he later married Abigail Hatch, this profile should be merged with Nathanial Finney. Alternatively, the birth and death dates are wrong on this profile, and the Nathanial who married Abigail Hatch was one of the other two.
