Biography

Marriage

30 September 1900, m. Florence Vail, daughter of William H. & Bell (Brews) Vail[1]

Children

John & Florence had three children, possibly more[2]:
  1. Wilbur Fiscus, b. 4 September 1902 in Iowa[2], m. Lillian R. Unknown[3]
  2. Eleanor Fiscus, b. ca. 1906 in Iowa[2]
  3. Walter Fiscus, b. ca. 1909 in Oklahoma[2]

Timeline

1874 John is born on 18 October in Owen County, Indiana to John A. V. & Matilda (Fiscus) Fiscus.[4] Ulysses S. Grant was President, blue jeans were patented and sold for $13.50 per pair (the equivalent to nearly $300 in today's dollars[5] ), and Europe and the United States were into the 2nd year of the Long Depression.

1880 John (age 5) is living with his family in Jefferson Township, Indiana -- his siblings are Frank (age 16), Mary (age 11), Edmund (age 3) and Bert ("Birt" in the census listing) (age 1).[6]

1897 Using the information from the 1905 Iowa Census[7], this appears to be the year that John moved from Indiana to Iowa.

1900 In June when the census was taken, there is a John Fiscus working as a "servant" in the household of Lucia Lane and her daughter Mercia in Albion, Marshall, County, Iowa[8], which is where John Q. marries Florence Vail on 30 September.[1] The John Fiscus in the census and his parents were born in Indiana, but there is a discrepancy with the date of birth -- this John was born in January 1875, but John Q. was born in October 1874.

1902 Their son Wilbur is born on 2 September in Marshall County, Iowa.[2][9]

1905 There appear to be two John Fiscuses living in Iowa in 1905. One is in Marshall County, Iowa. He was born in Indiana, is married and works as a farmer and has been living there for 8 years. The card does not list the name of his spouse.[7] The other (John A. Fiscus) lives in Audubon County, Iowa. He was also born in Indiana, is single and works as a laborer and has been living in Iowa for 4 years.[10] This information combined with the information from 1900 leads me to believe that it is our John Fiscus who was working for the Lane household.

1906 Their daughter Eleanor is born, and they are still living in Iowa.[2]

1909 Their son Walter was born sometime this year. His listing in the 1920 Census is the first mention of the family living in Oklahoma.[2]

1910 The family -- John, Florence, Wilbur, Eleanor and Walter -- is living in Cimarron, Lincoln County, Oklahoma. They have a hired and named Charley Powel.[11]

1917-1918 John registers for the World War I Draft in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.[12]

1920 John & Florence are living in Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma with their three children: Wilber (age 17), Eleanor (age 14) and Walter (age 11). They are living with the Andrews Family: Dorsey & Mary M Andrews and their three children: Loyd A (age 24), Anna M (age 16) and Luverne (age 11).[2]

1930 John, Florence and Walter (age 20) are living in one household in Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma.[13] Wilbur is married and is living in Stillwater with his wife Lillian.[3] I haven't been able to locate any records for Eleanor yet.

1940 John and Florence are living in Stillwater, Oklahoma.[14] There is an Eleanor Gaetringer living with her husband J. George in Woodward, Woodward City, Woodward, Oklahoma. There are no other Eleanors with a birth year of 1905-1907 living in Oklahoma listed in the 1940 Census.[15]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
