Biography

Elias was born on 28 Mar 1882 in Owen County, Indiana to Solomon Fiscus, Jr and Mary Hauser.[1]

The family continued living in Franklin Township, Owen County, Indiana as late as the 1900 Census. Elias was the 4th child out of the seven that were in the household at the time. He was 18 years old and working as a farm laborer.[2]

By 1907, the family had migrated to Audubon County, Iowa, and on 11 Sep 1907, Elias married Clara Speas, daughter of Alfred and Mary Elizabeth (Fiscus) Speas. They were second cousins, once removed.[3][4]

The 1910 Census shows Elias and Clara living in Union Township, Guthrie County, Iowa with two children -- Alice and Berma.[5]

Sometime before 12 Sep 1918, the family had moved to Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois, where Elias registered for the World War I draft. He was still working as a farm laborer. He was described as being tall with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair. He listed Clara as his next of kin.[citation needed] Two years later, they were living in Butler Township, Vermilion County, Illinois with four children -- Alice, Berma, Herbert and Ralph.[6]

The family was living in Bondville, Illinois in 1925 when their son Herbert died on 8 Aug at age 12 from influenza.[7] He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Clara died in 1927 from emphysema at the age of 40 leaving Elias to raise their six children, ranging in age from 5 to 19. [8]

In 1930 Elias was living with his parents in Champaign, Illinois. His children were living with various relatives:[9]

  • Ralph with his Aunt Ollie and her husband, Earl Kinnison
  • Richard with his Aunt Isabelle and her husband, Samuel Day
  • Myrlen with his Aunt Marilda and her husband, Thomas Herington

At some point between the time that Clara died in 1927, and when he married Nellie Marlar in 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska, it is said that he married Frances Menges; however, no record has been found yet.[citation needed]

On 14 Jun 1931, Elias married Nellie Marlar, and they were divorced on 22 Jul 1933.[10][11]

On 7 Sep 1937, Elias married his 4th wife, Lula (Frost) McMahill.[12] They were living at 804 N. State St. in Champaign. Elias was working as a department store janitor. There is a transcription error on this record which gives his age as 53 rather than 58, which is what is shown on the image of the record.[13]

Elias registered for the World War II draft in Apr 1942. He listed his daughter, Alice Belle Fiscus, as the person who will always know his address, and they were both living at 310 W. Hill, Champaign, Illinois. He was working for Dr. Arthur T. Sullivan, a "chiropodist," in the Robeson Building in Champaign, Illinois. He was described as being 5'11", 160 lbs with brown eyes, a bald head and light complexion.[1]

The 1950 Census shows Elias was living in Champaign, Illinois and working as a hotel clerk. His relationship to the head of the household is "lodger," and the household head was George Henson, a hotel manager. This suggests that Elias was living in the hotel where he worked. He said he was born in Indiana and was widowed.[14] However, Lula, his current wife, stated on her census listing that she was "separated." She was living with her son, Clarence McMahill, in Lake Crystal, Minnesota.

Elias died from bronchial pneumonia on 18 Jan 1970 at age 87 in Burleson Nursing Home in Burleson, Johnson County, Texas. His death record lists his occupation as hotel clerk. His son, Richard, was the informant for the death record.[15] Elias is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, Champaign County, Illinois.[16]

Research Notes

  • According to Lovell, Elias married four times. In addition to Clara Speas, his other wives are given as:
    • Frances Menges.
    • Nellie Unknown (possibly "Marlar")
    • Lulu (Frost) McMahill
