Joan Fitton was born about 1353 in Bollinfee, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England.
Joan was the daughter of Hamo Fitton of Bolyn,[1] and his wife Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter de Thornton, Kt.[2] Hamo was married to — daughter and coheir of Sir Piers Thornton and his wife, Lucia, daughter and coheir of Sir William Hellesby.[3]

Joan died on the Feast of St Giles the Abbot in 5 Richard II,[1] which was 1 September, 1382.
An inquisition in September 1388 about Joan daughter of Hamo Fitton of Bolyn found that: her son William de Venables, aged 12, was her heir; her second husband Nicholas had held her lands after her death until he died on 20 April "last past"; and that after Joan's death her son William was married to Joan, the daughter of John de Mascy of Tatton, Kt, by Hugh de Venables, his uncle.[1] At her death Joan was in possession of the 7th part of the lands which were of Peter de Thornton, Kt, in Kyngelegh, Norley and Onston, in Edesbury, and Stoke and Arwe, in Wirrall, excepting a 3rd part of the said lands which Philippa, who was the wife of the said Peter, held in dower, yearly value £4 18s 6d, and also of the manor of Bolyn, held as of the lordship of Macclesfield, by knight's service and the yearly rent of 5s, viz, 2s for Fulshagh and 3s for the hamlet of Falybrom, parcels of the said manor, and the finding of 33 men, "pro stabilitate facienda in les Coumbes," in the forest of Macclesfield, at the time of the lords hunting there, and the making of 72 1/2 rods of hedge for the said "Coumbes" at their own cost.[1]
