Biography

Philippe Arundel was the daughter and co-heiress of Edmund de Arundel, Knt., and Sibyl de Montagu.[1][2] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Philippe married first to Richard Sergeaux[2] (or Chergeaux), son and heir of Sir Richard Sergeaux and Margaret Seneschal, before 1371.[1] Philippe was Richard's second wife, he had been married previously to Elizabeth de Bodrugan, with whom he had a daughter, Elizabeth.[1]

Philippe and Richard had one son and four daughters:

In 1382, Philippe and her sister, Elizabeth, sued their uncle, Richard de Arundel, Earl of Arundel and Surrey for possession of property in Sussex.[1]

Sir Richard Sergeaux died 30 September 1393.[1][2] Philippe married second, before 13 April 1398 (as his 1st wife) John Cornwall (or Cornewaille, Cornewayll), K.G., (later Lord Fanhope), son and heir of Sir John Cornwall.[1][4] She had no known children by Sir John Cornwall.

Philippe died 13 September 1399.[1][3][4][5] She may have been buried at Saint Mary Chapel of Colquite St Mabyn.[6] Her husband, John Cornwall, married second to Elizabeth of Lancaster and they had two children. John died on 10 (or 11) December 1443.[1][4]

Inquisitions Post Mortem by writ 18 October 1399 at Cornwall and Oxford. Her heirs were her daughters Elizabeth, Philippa, Alice and Joan.[5]

Research Notes

In 1396 and 1396/7, Philippe, the widow of Sir Richard Sergeaux, daughter and one of the heirs of Sir Edmund Darundell, knight, had quitclaimed all lands etc., sometime of Richard, Earl of Arundel and Surrey, deceased, except specified manors in Sussex, which her husband had given to the present earl in exchange for the manor of Chipping Norton [Cal. Close Rolls, 1396-99, pp.72, 84]. On 20 April 1399, the manor of Chipping Norton, as held by Richard, late Earl of Arundel, was granted to Sir John Cornewaille and Philippe his wife [Cal. Patent Rolls, 1393-99, p.516]. The inquisitions taken after Philippe's death, 24 January and 24 March 1399/1400, according to which she died 13 September 1399, do not mention that she was the wife of Sir John Cornwall, but the Oxfordshire inquisition states that she held the manor of Chipping Norton of the king in chief, confirming her identity with the Philippe mentioned in the patent roll [Cal. Inq. p.m., vol.18, nos 31, 33].[4]

Removed parents Richard (FitzAlan) de Arundel and Isabel (Despenser) de Arundel as they only had one child (Edmund) per MCA2 p.186. There is no Phillippa named as a daughter of Richard and his second wife, Eleanor. What is the source for Richard as father? Burkes Peerage pg 201 (no longer considered a reliable source) has Phillippa m. Sir Richard Sergeaux as the only child of Richard and Isabel (this was disproved).

What source is there for her marriage to Robert de la Warre? A source in her father's bio says she married Sir Richard Serjeaux of Cornwall.
This family is well documented in primary records. They had 4 daughters and eventual co-heirs - Elizabeth, Philippa, Alice and Joan. You might want to just change Catherine's name to Joan rather than disconnecting.

Hi! I cannot find any support for a daughter named Catherine, and none is given on the attached profile. Please add source(s) if you know of any - otherwise, I'll detach the profile for Catherine.

Thanks!

Looking at her father's article could she be daughter of Isabel? Or perhaps even grand daughter through Edmund? Am thinking someone must have looked into this. :)
