Biography

Maud FitzJohn was the daughter of John FitzGeoffrey, Knt., of Shere, Surrey, etc., and Isabel Bigod, daughter of Magna Carta baron Hugh le Bigod, Earl of Norfolk,[1] and widow of Gilbert de Lacy of Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire.[2][3] Her birth date and place are not known, but are estimated by some to be between 1244 and 1250, possibly at Bernard Castle, Warwickshire, where her family held lands[4] (see comment below).

Her father, Sir John FitzGeoffrey, younger son of Geoffrey, Earl of Essex, was Justiciar of the Forest south of Trent and was appointed Justiciar of Ireland[2][5] by Henry III, by charter dated 4 November 1245.[3] As Maud was the eldest daughter, she was eventually the co-heir of her brother, Richard FitzJohn, Knt., of Shere and Fambridge.[5] Along with Sir Richard, Maud's siblings included younger sisters Isabel, wife of Robert de Vipont; Aveline, wife of Walter de Burgh, and Joan, who married Thebaud le Boteler, brother John FitzJohn, Knt. of Shere, who died before 1275,[2] and possibly William[3] (not named by Richardson). Maud's half-siblings, through her mother's first marriage to Gilbert de Lacy were: Walter de Lacy, Margery (de Lacy) de Verdun, and Maud de Lacy, Baroness Geneville.[2]

The chronicle of Tintern Abbey in Monmouthshire names Matilda uxor Guidono comitis Warwici as the eldest daughter of Johanni Fitz-Geffrey and Isabella Bygod. Her paternal grandparents were Geoffrey FitzPeter, 1st Earl of Essex, and Aveline de Clare. Her maternal grandparents were Magna Carta baron Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk and Maud Marshal, daughter of William Marshal, Regent of England and Earl of Pembroke.[6]

Marriages and Children

Maud married first to Gerald de Furnival, Knt.,[1] Lord of Hallamshire.[6] They had no issue.[1] Gerald was the son of Thomas de Furnivall, Lord Hallamshire and Bertha de Ferrers.[4] He died before 18 October 1261 and, each year, Maud gave one mark to Worksop Priory to celebrate his anniversary.[1]
Maud FitzJohn married second before 1270 to William de Beauchamp, 9th Earl Warwick, son and heir of Sir William de Beauchamp and Isabel Mauduit.[1][7] They had at least two sons and three daughters.
  • John,[1][7]
  • Guy, Knt., 10th Earl of Warwick,[7] born about 1271-5, died at Warwick Castle on 12 August 1315, married first to Isabel de Clare, they had no issue and later divorced. Guy married second to Alice de Tony and had seven children.[1][8]
  • Isabel, wife of Sir Patrick de Chaworth and of Sir Hugh le Despenser, later Earl of Winchester[1][8] (Lewis omits the 2nd marriage, presumably just a mistake). Isabel died before 30 May 1306.[7]
  • nun at Shouldham,[8] Anne[1][7]
  • nun at Shouldham,[8] Amy[1][7]

Inheritance

In 1297, Maud was co-heiress to her brother, Sir Richard, 1st Lord Fitz John, and inherited the manors of Cherhill, Wiltshire, Potterspury, Northamptonshire, and Quarrendon, Buckinghamshire, along with townships in the cantred of the Isles in Thomond in Ireland.[1]

Death and Burial

Maud, Countess of Warwick, died on 16 (or 18) April 1301.[1][7] Her husband, William, predeceased her, dying 5 (or 9) June 1298 at Elmley, Worcestershire.[1] Maud was buried on 7 May 1301 in the church of the Friars Minor, Worcester, Worcestershire,[7] where her husband had been buried 22 June 1298.[1]
The will of "William de Beauchamp Earl of Warwick", dated 14 September 1296, bequeathed property to "Maud my wife...Guy my eldest son...my two daughters nuns at Shouldham".[6]

Research Notes

Disputed Children

Sir William Dugdale assigns them another daughter, Margaret, said have been married and another son, Robert, who died in infancy.[citation needed]
Although not named by Richardson, they may have had another daughter, Maud/Mathilda (Beauchamp) Rither (perhaps she is the same person as Margaret, above). See her profile, which has several sources attached.

Robert Beauchamp is reported by Sir William Dugdale as a son of William Beauchamp by Maud FitzJohn, so he is added back to the family. According to the source, he died in infancy.

The same source reports another married daughter, Margaret, but I haven't found her husband's name yet.

Sorry to be too hasty. Fixing it.

Profiles for several people listed as daughters or sons of Maud FitzJohn and William Beauchamp have been removed from the connection today. They had no sources, and were not recognized as children of Maud and William by Douglas Richardson in Royal Ancestry (2013) Vol V, page 285-287. They were not listed by Lewis in Our Royal, Titled, Noble and commoner Ancestors and Cousins (sourced). Adding reliable sources with evidence of the relationship will of course change their current status.

There are three other children also not recognized by experts such as Richardson, which need to be removed or have sources added: Robert Beauchamp-180, Beatrice Bruley-32, and Matilda Beauchamp-183. Unsourced trees and other such collections are not sources.

Please help make Maud's profile accurate.
