Biography

Wardner was born in 1892 in Shanghai, China, probably named after one of his father's friends. He was the third-born son of Gideon Henry Fitz Randolph and Lucy Jane Greene, Seventh Day Baptist missionaries. His family returned to America the following year and spent 3 years in Marlboro, NJ before settling in Fouke, Arkansas. His parents continued their missionary work there, establishing a school and a farm to support it. Wardner went to college at Alfred University, after which he returned to teach in Fouke, AR. He married Bertha Madelia Rebecca Pierce there in 1913. He reported himself as a farmer in Berea, West Virginia when he registered for the draft in 1917, but then went back to Alfred for Theology studies, enlisting there shortly in the Army as the war was ending. He served as a pastor in Hartsville, NY. He and Bertha had eight children together from 1914 to 1936. By 1927, the family had settled in Texarkana, AR where Wardner worked as a mailman. In 1945, he and his wife moved to Jamaica to serve nine years as Seventh Day Baptist missionaries, helping to establish and run a school. They later moved to Daytona Beach, FL where he served as the Seventh Day Baptist minister. He passed away there in 1958, and is buried with his wife in East Memorial Gardens, Texarkana, AR.

Obituary

"The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 165, No 16, p 9, Nov. 3, 1958. Posted on Find A Grave memorial of Rev. Wardner T. FitzRandolph.[1]

"The Rev. Wardner T. FitzRandolph, son of Rev. and Mrs. Gideon H. FitzRandolph was born in China on June 25, 1892, where his parents were Seventh Day Baptist missionaries. He passed away in Daytona Beach, Fla., October 4, 1958. Funeral services were held in Texarkana, Ark., Friday, October 10, with the Rev. Marion C. Van Horn officiating.

The Rev. Mr. FitzRandolph was a graduate of Alfred University, Alfred, N. Y., and taught school for a time in the schools of Miller county, Ark. In 1913 he married Miss Bertha Pierce of Fouke, Ark., who survives him. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 17, 1958. He was a veteran of World War I and was later employed in the mail service.

Mr. and Mrs. FitzRandolph served two five-year terms as our missionaries in Jamaica, B.W.I., going there in February, 1945, and returning to this country on July 19, 1956. During his years of service as supervisor of Seventh Day Baptist missions he also assisted in the establishment of Crandall High School and served as headmaster of the school. He also helped forward the Maiden Hall Country School project.

Both Mr. and Mrs. FitzRandolph gave of their very strength and life to the work of the Jamaica Seventh Day Baptist churches, providing leadership and encouraging an evangelistic spirit among the brethren of the island. He also made several supervisory trips to give help and encouragement to our pastors and workers in British Guiana, S. A., as requested by the Missionary Board. His relationship with the Board of Managers was always cooperative and helpful.

Since retiring from the employment of the Missionary Society the Rev. Mr. FitzRandolph had accepted the pastorate of the Daytona Beach Seventh Day Baptist Church. We record the death of this brother in Christ with sorrow and a sense of loss but bow to the will of our Heavenly Father in all things. We express to his family our deepest sympathy."

Surname note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in both the family in which Wardner was a child and the one which he headed, as part of their surname: the Oris H.F. Randolph genealogy (referenced below), however, lists the children in the family in which Wardner is a child all as 'Fitz Randolph', but lists his own children as simply 'Randolph'. However, Wardner, his wife and children all appear to have consistently used the Fitz, and it appears that Wardner adopted the practice of merging it as FitzRandolph. The current consensus is to use the surname Fitz Randolph as his Last Name at Birth, and FitzRandolph as his Current name. When profiles are created for his children, it will be important to decide which version is appropriate based on how their names are reported in records. Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed! Examples:

  • In the marriage bond for his father's first marriage, John is recorded as John L. Fitz Randolph, and signs it as 'John L. Fitz randolph' with a clear space between Fitz and randolph
  • In the 1840, 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, his father is recorded as John L F Randolph. And similarly in his second and third marriage records
  • In the 1870 census, all family members use the F initial.
  • Henry's name was consistently referred to as Gideon Henry Fitz Randolph in Seventh Day Baptist publications.
  • His family memorial marker indicates 'FitzRANDOLPH', but it is not clear whether the lack of a space between the names was intentional.
  • Wardner signed his draft registration in 1917 and in 1942 as 'Wardner Titsworth FitzRandolph' with the 'z' connected to the 'R' as if one word.

Research notes

He is a descendent of Mayflower Passengers: Samuel Fuller and George Soule.
