Isabel Fitz John was the daughter of John FitzGeoffrey, Knt., of Shere, Surrey, and his wife Isabel le Bigod, daughter of Hugh le Bigod, a Magna Carta Surety.[1] The place of her birth is unknown, her birth date is estimated based on the 1251 birth date of her daughter, Isabel.
On some date after 19 November 1242, she married Robert de Vipont (or Vieuxpont) of Appleby, etc., probably as a young child. Robert was born about 1234 and was the son and heir of John de Vipont of Appleby etc., and Sibyl Ferrers.[1] Isabel and Robert had two daughters:
Isabel, born about 1251, died before 14 May 1292, married Roger de Clifford and had issue[1]
Idoine, born about 1258, died before 18 November 1333, wife of Roger de Leyburn and of Sir John de Cromwell, had no children[1]
Isabel's date and place of death are unknown. Her husband Robert died testate in 1264,[1] their daughters being his co-heiresses. Their wardships were bought by Sir Roger de Clifford and Sir Roger de Leybourne, who of course soon became their fathers-in-law and set about partitioning their estate.[2]
Isabel and Robert's daughter Idoine had no children, but she lived until after 1330, so the Cliffords, as heirs of Idoine's sister and co-heiress, Isabel, had to wait that long before eventually coming into the whole Vipont estate.[2] In the meantime, they made themselves sole masters of Appleby by exchanging Staveley for Idoine's half-share.[citation needed]
Research Notes
Estimated Date of Death
It is assumed that Isabel predeceased her husband. There is no evidence to support any of the multiple unsourced dates of death for Isabel found on the internet:
"April 16, 1259" was added as her date of death from a merged profile, (see this change page). The date did not have a before or after attached to it, but it may be tied to an IPM for her father, who died 23 Nov 1258 (from both his Wikipedia article and entry in Marlyn Lewis's database (Sir John FitzGeoffrey, but date without citation); just 1258 in Cawley's MedLands).
d. circa 20 May 1274 in her entry in The Peerage (website compiled by Darryl Lundy, accessed June 14, 2015), with no source given for the date. However, 20 May 1274 is the death date given by Cawley in Medieval Lands for Isabel's sister Aveline, who is not listed in "The Peerage".
Find a Grave memorial #84044379 has death as Apr. 16, 1301, Cumbria, England with text stating "Isabel FitzJohn Vipoint died in Shap, Cumbria, England and is buried at Shap Abbey." (no sources given)
