Gerald Fitzgerald was born about 1560; son of Edward FitzGerald, himself 2nd. son of Gerald Fitzgerald the 9th Earl of Kildare. His mother was Agnes Leigh daughter of Sir John Leigh of Stockwell, Surrey [1] and his wife Elizabeth Darcy. Agnes was the widow of Thomas Paston MP. [1]
Gerald commanded a regiment of foot in the wars against Tyrone; was one of the council to George Carew, President of Munster. [2]
Gerald succeeded as 14th. Earl of Kildare after his 1st cousin William FitzGerald was lost at sea in August 1599. That year after the Eral opf Essex departed Ireland he appointed to the command of the district of Naas. [3]
He married, by Papal dispensation, in 1600 Elizabeth Nugent, daughter of Christopher Nugent, 9th. Lord Delvin, by his cousin-german Mary, daughter of his uncle Gerald Fitzgerald, 11th. Earl of Kildare, [2]
That year he was appointed on 31 August by letters Patent Elizabeth 1st. as Governor of Offaly. [2] & [3]
He died February 1611 and was buried at Kildare. [2]
His widow died 11 March, 1621, and was buried at St. Patrick's, Dublin. [2]
