Biography

John FitzGerald born approx 1367 the younger son of Maurice FitzThomas FitzGerald 4th Earl of Kildare and his wife Elizabeth Burghersch [1]

He is believed by Lodge to have married 1st. Margaret de la Herne [1] (possibly d. 1409 aged 23 at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire - unsourced) [2]

In 1409 he was appointed Justice of the Peace for Kildare. [2]

He strengthened and enlarged the Fitzgerald Castles of Maynooth and Kilkea in 1426. [3]

He succeeded on the death of his brother Gerald FitzMaurice FitzGerald, as 6th. Earl of Kildare in 1432; [2]

He m2) Rose Basset (unsourced - Peerage) E. M. Boyle writes : “ Ollery says she was a daughter of a butcher,” and O’Ferrall says she was a daughter of Lord Bourchier. but according to the pedigrees above referred to, he married a “ daughter of Basset. [2]

John FitzGerald 6th Earl of Kildare possibly died around 1434

He was succeeded as 7th Earl of Kildare in 1456 by his grandson Thomas FitzGerald son of John Cam Fitzgerald. Succession was probably after his father has died. [2]

  1. John Cam Fitzgerald (bc 1383 - c 1456) Passed over in the succession, presumably because of his deformity. m. a dau of daughter of Lord Burbaes - Issue.
  2. Margaret FitzGerald m. c 1433 Tadgh O'Connor Faly (died of the plague 1471); son of An Calbach O'Connor Faly; (d.1458) King of Ui Failghe and his wife Mairghréag O'Carroll. [4]
