Biography

Owen Fitzpatrick was born 1828 in Lisreagh, Cavan, Ireland to Patrick and Bridget.

He married Rose Ann Fitzsimmons in 1854 in New York. They had four children during their marriage.

He died September 15, 1895 in Modesto, California.

Family all well. Monday, November 17 Weather continues very pleasant. Pat and Owen did not work today. Owen’s child died and was bured this afternoon. I worked all day topping out Mr. Selby’s stable. We are all very well. Thursday, December 4 Weather continues about the same. Working at the same place. I have no one working for me now except Owen the tender. I have nothing except jobing but I have plenty of that to do. Family all well. Monday, December 8 Weather very pleasant. We worked all day at the Jewett’s. I have no one but Owen my tender at work & I am kept very busy. Family all well except Ella she has quite a bad cold. Friday, December 12 Weather quite pleasant except the mornings they are quite cool. Owen and I are still at the same place. Evening Sallie & I went up to Mr. Rhees to the sing. Mr. Rhees is quite sick. Family is all about the same. Monday, December 15 Weather continues pleasant but the mornings are quite cool & frosty. I finished at Mr. Rideout’s about 9. Dorsey is piecing up the pavement at the same place. In the afternoon Owen & I commenced a job at the graveyard for Mr. Smith & Rearden. 1863 Thursday, April 16 Weather pleasant. I am still working at the same place. I have no one but Owen working for me now. Family all about the same. Friday, June 5 Weather pleasant. We had to quit the Jail job at noon on account of Owen getting sick. Eve we went to the sing. Family all well. Wednesday, June 24 Weather pleasant but part of the day was quite warm. I was a little unwell most all day. Owen was taken with a chill this afternoon. John Gill got home sick and left us this eve. Thursday, July 9 Weather very warm. Dorsey, Owen & I worked all day at the Marysville Mill building some piers. Family all well. Monday, September 28 I worked most all day at the Selby House paveing and digging up old Led pipe. I had Owen with me. Family all well. Wednesday, October 7 Weather quite pleasant. I worked part of the day. Late in the afternoon I was taken quite sick & had to stop work & go Home. I left Dorsey & Owen to finish the cistern. Friday, November 20 We had the children’s and Mo. Likenesses taken today. Weather pleasant except a little cool in the morning. I took a little job to do today for Mr. Nutter. Owen worked all day at the Hall making morter. He commenced last Tuesday. Family all well. Saturday, November 21 Weather a little cool all day. Owen finished making up the 80 hundred of [--] that was [--] at the Hall. I collected 400 Dollars for the work of the jail today and paid a note in Bank of 225 Dollars besides other Bills. Wednesday, December 30 Weather very pleasant. I am doing some work at the Odd Fellows Hall. Owen is making morter at the Masonic Hall. I rec’d a letter from Josiah today with $510.00 copons for collecttion. Family all well. 1865 Monday, January 2 Weather cloudy and the Roads are very mudy. Owen made morter all day at Mr. Starr’s Mill. I want to get to work there just as soon as the roads get so we can hall Brick. We have had quite a long spell of wet weather and still has the appearance of more. I collected some money for J. S. Bowen and sent it to him today. Family all well. I have plenty of work but weather too bad to do anything. Thursday, January 5 Weather clear but very mudy yet. Owen work today making up morter at Starr’s. John Cook is doing the carpenter work for Mr. Starr. He is doing it by the day. Times are quite dull around town on account of the roads being so bad that teams cannot get in or out of the city and the farmers are all very busy now putting in the crops. Family all well. I made a gate for the B yard today. Wednesday, January 11 Weather pleasant. I worked all day with Owen at the Mill. The walls are very thick in the foundation 5 ½ Brick. Family well. Mr. Wm Bolinger paid me the (450) fore hundred & fifty Dollars today that he agreed a year or so ago when I signed a Bond for I. S. Love providing that I would have anything to pay. He was as good as his word for which I give him much creadit. Thursday, January 12 Weather pleasant. I & Owen worked all day at the Mill. Just as soon as I can get more teams on I will sat more at work. Family well. Saturday, January 14 Weather continues pleasant. I did not work today my rist is sore. Jas. & Owen worked untill 9 O’clock. Family well. Friday, January 27 Weather cloudy & wet most of the day. I worked in the morning to finish up the back wall. I have about ½ days more work on the first story. Owen is making up morter in the afternoon. Monday, February 6 Weather quite pleasant today. there was quite a frost last night. We commenced on the second story of the Mill today with the following hands Owen Fitzpatrick, Jas. McCormack, John Miller, tenders, Billings, Jas. Cory & Evan Knapp, Bricklayers. Jerry Revere is doing my halling yet. He has Mr. Empy to help him for a while. Family all well. We commenced on Starr’s Kiln of Brick on this story. I give him $6 for them and lay them for $13. Monday, February 13 Weather has the appearance of rain. Owen au making morter at the Mill. The carpenters are getting ready to put on the joist there. Family all well. Thursday, February 16 Weather about the same. Cloudy & wet. Owen worked part of the day at the Mill making morter. Family well. Monday, February 20 Weather quite cool in the morning. Owen & I finished at the grave yard about noon today. family well. Friday, March 3 Weather quite cool & cloudy. It rained a little in the afternoon & evening. We did not go to the Bible class this evening on account of the weather. Owen & I worked this forenoon on the Mill getting ready to top out the gables. I Rec. a letter from Stoneburger in regard to a note I signed for Warren & Stoneburger. I expect that I will have it to pay. Thursday, March 16 Weather continues very pleasant. Owen & I worked all day at the Mill. I am getting along very well with the Mill. I have it all finished except the Office & Engine Room by the last of this week. Family all well. Evening at home. Monday, March 20 Weather pleasant. I did not work today I was not very well. Billings & Owen worked all day for my part at the Mill & the balance at the Graveyard. I collected $500 from Mr. A. D. Starr today that being the first payment on the Mill. Monday, April 3 Weather pleasant. Owen & I worked at Mr. A. D. Starr’s Mill most all day making some repares or alterations in the smut Room. Family all well. Friday, May 26 Weather continues quite warm. I am still working at the Mill. I have no one to help me but Owen. Family well. Tuesday, June 6 Weather warm. I am still working away at the Mill. Owen is helping me. I applied to the Lodge this evening for my final card. I am very busy getting things ready so I can get off as soon as possible.
