Family Name

The name "Randolph" is thought to be derived from various names for wolves in terms of rank and importance rather than literally a wolf of large size. There is speculation that "Randolph" came from the old Norse name "Reignwolf" meaning "big wolf," or "Rannulfr" which means "shield wolf," or the Old German "Rannulf" meaning "raven wolf," or the Anglo Saxon "raed wulf" meaning "counsel wolf."

Through the many centuries, and in the migrations from Normandy to England and later to America, spelling of the family name has undergone many changes. Most people were illiterate. Church, Monastery, and public records, such as they were, were kept in Latin. Numerous variations of spelling include Ranolf, Ranulf, Ranulfus, Radulph, Randolph, Rolf, Rollo, and Ralph.

"Fitz" means "son of" and is derived from "Filius", the Latin word for son. Thus evolved the name Fitz Randolph or Fitzrandolph.

THE FITZ RANDOLPH OF NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND SPENNITHORNE COAT OF ARMS: "Ar. a chief indented az. Crest - On a chapeau or, turned up az, a wyvern of the last." [18]

Recent Y-DNA evidence on the Fitz Randolph line has shed light on the surname's history and is calling into question much of the early (pre-1500) Fitz Randolph ancestral claims by Wagner/Oris H. Fitz Randolph. Of particular interest is the clear relationship between the Y-DNA tested Fitz Randolph men and a specific branch of the Hollingsworth (Hollingworth/Hollyngworth/etc.) family of Cheshire.

A large population of Fitz Randolph/Randolph men descend from Edward Fitz Randolph, who arrived in Massachusetts in 1630. The founding of the surname appears to have occurred within a handful of generations before Edward's birth; prior to that, the male line ancestral name was Hollingworth. As new evidence comes in, it appears that the Fitz Randolphs descend from a known branch of the Hollingworth line (known as the "Hollingworth Hall" branch of Cheshire).

The Hollingworth name is well researched, with heavy emphasis on Y-DNA testing and use of written records about this large family to which the Fitz Randolphs appear to belong.
