Engelbert's birth date is not known, nor are his parents.
He had a brother called Gotbert who is said to have built a fortification at Brienne. In 951 they are recorded by Flodard of Rheims, a contemporary, as raiding the nearby countryside, with Louis IV besieging and destroying the castle.[1]
In 968 Engelbert subscribed a charter, so he died after that.[1]
It is possible that he married - though no name of his wife is known - and had a daughter called Ingeltrude.[1]
Engelbert has previously been shown on WikiTree as son of Baudouin of Flanders and Ælfthryth, daughter of King Alfred the Great. There is no evidence to support this, and he was therefore detached.
Footprints in Time: Thirty-Two Generations of Bryans states that he is Engelbert de Flanders. Engelbert and his brother relocated to Brienne, France. Names were often locational in that time period. The name evolved over time and became Bryan.[2] Projects Medlands] also refers to him as Englebert I, and his brother Gotbert as being in Brienne, France, and using the name Comtes de Brienne. Location names were common and many of their ancestors had been referred to as 'de Flanders' or 'de Flandres'.[1]
