When the Flemings left Ireland and immigrated to New Jersey in the 1700's, they brought with them a deep abiding faith in God and the Presbyterian religion.
Eleanor Fleming, oldest child of William Fleming and Elizabeth (Cook) Fleming, was born at her father's farmhouse near Oxford Furnace, Warren County, 23rd March, 1800.
She was considered "a specially lovable, kind and endearing person."
She united with the Presbyterian Church at Hazen, west of the village of Oxford Furnace, in May 13, 1823. In 1824 she moved with her parents into the Barrens" of Alexandria township in Hunterdon County, where in the same year, June 12, she joined the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.
Eleanor was a weaver, and lived some time near Frenchtown on the Delaware river, about eight miles south of the family home in the "Barrens." She lived a separate life for many years. Later in life she married a widower, Samuel Mitchell, who had a farm in Warren County. No children were born of this union.
She is buried in the old walled cemetery at Bethlehem Church in the Fleming plot. Her grave is marked by a white marble stone in which is cut this inscription. "In memory of Eleanor Fleming, widow of Samual Mitchell, died May 5, 1878, aged 78 years, 1 mo, 12 days." " All is well." The stone stands beside those of William and Elizabeth Fleming, her parents.
