Biography

Samuel was born in 1632, most likely in England. He was the son of Robert Fletcher. He settled in the part of Chelmsford which is now Westford. In 1679, Samuel Fletcher took up a piece of land on the west side of Great Tadmuck (twenty-six acres) the bounds of which were renewed in 1709. He subsequently made additions to his original grant until he owned about four hundred acres, extending to Sparks Hill and "Mackrill Cove" including the farm on which his grandson William settled about 1730. He was admitted freeman, March 21, 1690.[1]

He married Margaret Hailstone, on Oct. 14, 1659 in Chelmsford. The marriage was performed by William Parker of Taunton. She was the daughter of William Hailstone, of Taunton..[2]According to E. H. Fletcher Samuel and Margaret had five children: Sarah, Samuel, Hannah, Lydia, and William. [1]However, there is no mention of Sarah in the vital records of Chelmsford, while the births of other four are recorded.

After the death of Margaret, about 1676, Samuel was married two more times: first,to Hannah Foster about 1677, and again, to Mary Stow Cotton, widow of John, about 1684.

Samuel died on Dec. 9, 1697,[3] and his gravestone in the burying-ground in Middle Chelmsford reads :

HERE LYES Ye BODY OF
SAMUEL FLETCHER
AGED 65 YEARS
DIED DECEMBER 9
1697

Notes

Found multiple versions of NAME. Using Sgt Samuel /Fletcher/.
Birth year 1632 (calculated from grave marker)
Perhaps in Chelmsford, Essex, England, Anderson (Great Migration Directory, page 107) has Robert Fletcher arriving in 1637, This would indicate Samuel was born in England,

The following is an excerpt from the only document extant from Samuel's estate:

"This Instrument Writen this Tenth Day of June in the yeare of our Lord – one Thousand Seven Hundred. Witnesseth that there is an Agrement made Between the Relict Widow of Samuell Fletcher Late of Chelmsford In the County of Middleseix: Whoe Deseased ye: ninth day of Desember: 1697 whoe Dyed Intestat: and the Sons and Daughter of Said Samuel Fletcher whi[ch] is in Manner as followeth - - - - Imprs: It is agreed upone in Case of the Approbation of the Honoured Judg of the probate of Wills hereunto"

and further

"3 the Afore said Samuel and William Fletcher are to pay to John perham the Husband of the Daughter of Aforesd Deaseased Soe much In Corne or Cattell or other pay at mony price to make up the Sum of on and Thirty pound "

The listing of Samuel's children specifies daughter, rather than daughters, this means that only one daughter, Lydia Perham, was still living in 1700. Thus Hannah was not living in 1700 and could not have died in 1759 , and most probably did not marry Ebenezer Wright.
